Games for the traveling man
I am about to do a lot of traveling, lots of time in the air and on the train. That being the case im going to bring my trusty old laptop with me for some time killing entertainment sense i never could sleep well in transit. The thing is, as i said, my laptop is kinda old. It has a 2.8GHZ Pentium 4 CPU , 768 MB of ram and an integrated ati shared ram video card. I know, i know its garbage by todays standards. but i never bothered to upgrade it because it serves its only typical purpose (walking around house with teh interwebz) perfectly.
Anyhow, i was really hoping you guys could give me some suggestions as to what older games i could play on this laptop. I dont expect to play modern games at all, and im fine with that. The limit of this computer is just about Warcraft III, which it plays just fine at high settings. Anyone have any suggestions for games of similar to WC3 requirments? im a fan of just about all types be it rpg, action, adventure whatever. If its a generally really good game, ill enjoy it. 2D, 3D, old , new whatever. I just didnt want to go to the store and buy games that A. have low requirements but turn out to suck or B. are great but play so poorly its unenjoyable as of rite now the only games i have that i know ill be bringing are DeusEx (I LOVE THAT GAME) and Warcraft 3 + frozen throne. I appreciate your suggestions, im sure someones got some good oldies-but-goodies or new-but-low-req |

Re: Games for the traveling man
How about classic games like Command n Conquer/Total Annihalation? Homeworld? Tons of RTS games out there that can run on an old system. If you like FPS, how about the old RB6 series? A lot of options out there.

Re: Games for the traveling man
Try these : Thief 2 (not if the laptop has a dual core cpu); Dungeon Siege 1&2;
Red alert 2; Age of Empires 1&2 ; NFS Hot Pursuit 2 ; NFS Underground 1&2 (2 should run) Delta Force 3(delta force extreme might run) Neverwinter Nights; GTA 3 & Vice City; Scrapland (rpg, lots of fun); some newer games might also run ! I'll think of some more and reply when I do, have to go to lunch. |

Re: Games for the traveling man
ive played the Command and Conquer games to death over the past decade and i never really cared for the grand theft auto games, but ill give Dungeon Siege a shot. Ive tried getting thief 2 to run, but it just crashes on start up.
i have no idea what RB6 is but i'll look it up. I think im going to lean more toward RPGish games simply because they have exceptional playing time. I hate racing games of any kind, which is about the only game type i simply wont play. thanks for the suggestions, anyone else got some must-plays for the lower end? |

Re: Games for the traveling man
Hello again.
Try getting your hands on Fable : The Lost Chapters. It's running on a friends laptop with lower specs than yours, it's a great game ,if you like RPG's it's something you'll want to play. |

Re: Games for the traveling man
Damn man ! It's a really cool game.
If you're into rpg's try getting Icewind Dale 2 (1 is to old) and Sacred and the Underworld expansion. Sacred rocked and Icewind Dale took a really long time to finish. |

Re: Games for the traveling man
O yeah, almost forgot...
There is a number of solves for the problems with Thief 2, just Google ''thief 2 and dual core cpu's'', I did it a year or so ago and found a few solves can't remember if they worked or what they were, but I do remember that none of the patches I got worked. |

Re: Games for the traveling man
Starcraft is a classic.
AoE 2 is always nice.. Get "N", it's a platform/puzzle/strategy game.. very addicting, I must say. What about a SNES emulator? Super Mario and Donkey Kong baby! (sorry if I'm not supposed to mention that) If you want to go reaaally old school, get Chips Challenge. Originally a Windows 95 program. I know it works on Vista. |

Re: Games for the traveling man
emulators are awesome! I bought a gamepad and play the original mario bros and all the old games on the laptop whenever I'm traveling or just bored. I even play the N64 Mario still. You'll have countless hours of fun without taxing your system.

http://www.nintendo.com/corp/legal.jsp#emergence Technically its illegal and certainly would be if you were say making a profit from their roms. Even if the game is not commercial available it does not change its copywrite status. this however is not stopping people distributing emulators and roms. I think if you were hosting a site selling them it would be a different matter. |

Re: Games for the traveling man
although nintendo has this
http://www.nintendo.com/corp/legal.jsp#download_rom and they really hate having people take their games I would say download at your own risk I now of a couple good emulators but I will not say which ones I know publicly on this forum. what about final fantasy series? FF 7 and FF 8 are on the PC and they require something like a 10 year old comp with a 16 mb video card. I 've spent too many hours playing those ones FF7 , 8 Faces of War (its like a RTS game but you can direct control units) I doubt you could run it though it may be right on the edge of your system requirements there are older games of the same (!c is the company) Soldiers; Heroes of WW2 I think metal gear solid is for the PC same with metal gear solid 2
