vista or XP?
so I'm getting my gaming PC built, and the person in the shop said I should definitaly get XP. However, I've already got the vista ultimate 64 bit disc, so I said I'll install vista. Now my mom says im making a mistake because "that man knows what he's on about", and he clearly didn't because he said a quad core 2,2GHz is better than a dual core 2,6GHz for gaming, just because it has 4 cores. Anyway, can I have your opinions on this? I think vista is better because it has DX10, and will have DX11 soon, and XP won't. Of course I can also download patches for it as well. So, what do you think?

Re: vista or XP?
At the moment its best to stick with XP. Vista was not ready for gaming when it was released and it still isn't. DX10 is no better than DX9 there is no difference between them except for the part that i can get 50-60fps on Crysis in DX9 and only 10fps in DX10.
Ive got a dual boot setup and overall i can say XP has about 140% better performance in all games compared to Vista. So stick with XP as long as you can. In terms of the dual core and quad. Some new games like Crysis, Fallout3, FarCry 2 ect.. Will take advantage of a Quad, but both average about the same in performance so thats up to you which one you get.

Re: vista or XP?
Yes many new games you install on Vista will have a function to run it in either DX10 or DX9 (You will need to install the latest DX9 from the MS website). Most the time switching DX's can be done in the "in-game" settings but others require you to you add "-DX9" onto the shortcut of the game.
Even though there is not much difference between DX9 on Vista and DX9 on XP, Vista still tends to crash more.

Re: vista or XP?
Well vista has a nice outfit. You dont get bored from it.
but many of the features vista has are a pain. Plus i tried to run XP and i went from 1/3 ram usage down to 1/10 usage on desktop. What you can do is to run Vista with 98 theme, but then vista is unnecessary kinda. Stick with XP if possible get x64 if possible dual-boot. U might also run into driver issues with XP. Its your call. Last edited by koala; 11-10-2008 at 03:26 PM. |

Re: vista or XP?
well I've already got a vista x64 bit disc, so I'll probably try that out. I'm using it ATM on my laptop, and have it set to the 98 theme. That makes it quicker and I've also turned off UAC, which gets rid of some of the annoyances. So I'll try out vista, and if it isn't as good as I expected, I'll buy an XP CD :)

Re: vista or XP?
I got vista, because i figured sooner or later the technological world will catch up with me. Which it kind of already has. I have 4 gigs of RAM and XP only supports up to 3.4 I believe (not sure). Also, XP has some incompatibilities with SLi in video cards, and absolutely no support for three way SLi cards, of which I am a fan, so I went with Vista but had to get a really large system to justify it. So in this case I hope with dual GeForce 9800's I can scrape a good frames per second rate gaming in Vista anyways. I just thought I'd point out that XP is eventually going to run out of support for certain state of the art hardware one of these days and I thought it logical to break down, lower my standards, and buy Vista even though it kills me to think about.
