ok, im usually playing cod4, it is running smothly most of the time but sometimes i get these major fps drops. i have to restart the game or load something from the graphic options ( just swith my resolution up and down, press apply so the game goes in an out( hard 2 explane))

i should run cod4 smoothly cuz im running everything on low! this happens in all the games i play! it is running smothly but i get these drops, no idea what causes them

ive teste my pc in systen req lab and i got green on minimum AND maximum.
so its not the game, it's something with my computer...

have about 600 gigs so thats not a problem
4GB RAM (32 vista)
Intel core duo cpu t9300 @ 2.50GHz

Re: games starts to lag for no reason! (fps)

Reboot your computer, then go into BIOS and post back with your temperatures and voltages.

To monitor temps/volts during gameplay, use SpeedFan

We need to see the temperatures and voltages at idle (BIOS) and under stress (while gaming).

Are there any other programs running in the background while you're playing a game?

What make/model is your graphics card and PSU?

Re: games starts to lag for no reason! (fps)

sry if this sounds noobish... Dont have a clue how i use the speed fan, BUT, when i quikly alt+tab outside the game, Core 0 and Core 1 had a fire logo, but it went away after a few seconds outside the game...

ive got nvidia geforce 9650MGS turbocache, not the best but ive tested it at sys req lab and it IS enough to atleas run the game at medium

Re: games starts to lag for no reason! (fps)

It is maybe a cooling problem. Try opening your case and see if it alleviates the problem a bit. If you don't think cooling is a problem, then try to see if any background program runs intermittently (virus scans and the like). If still no luck, see what in game condition causes the drops. While your system should run CoD 4 just fine, sometimes somethings are heavier than others (like ragdolls or so).

Of course, the usual chat of update drivers, yadda yadda yadda...

Good luck.

Re: games starts to lag for no reason! (fps)

Are there any other programs running in the background while you're playing a game? (eg. MP3 player, antivirus, defrag, etc)

Do you know how to enter the BIOS? The temperatures and PSU voltages listed in here will tell us if the power supply unit is struggling with no load and if any of your components are too hot.

To use SpeedFan, leave it open on the desktop displaying the temperatures and voltages, then run a fullscreen game for a few minutes until it starts to lag. Then alt-tab back to SpeedFan and hit the PrintScreen button on your keyboard. Paste this into Paint and save it, then attach the screenshot to your next post. The readings can be confusing so it's easier if you just post the screenshot rather than trying to interpret what's going on.

To see your PSU details, remove the side panel of your case. The PSU is the box at the top rear with the power cable plugged into it. There is a label on the side of the PSU giving all the details we need. Post back with the make, model and total watts. (eg. make:Thermaltake, model:ToughPower, watts:650W)

While the case is open, see how many fans there are at the front and back of your case (not the fans on the CPU, PSU or graphics card). How many, and how are they positioned?

If the CPU Core temperatures are showing a flame symbol in SpeedFan, blow any dust out of your case using a can of compressed air, especially around the CPU heatsink/fan and card slots. Be careful not to touch anything while you're in there.

Are any of your fans not spinning or making a louder than usual noise?

Visit nVidia's site and see if they have an updated package for you.
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

So it's not heat, and you are using a laptop so you are stuck with that video chip... I'd try turning down some in-game graphics settings.

leverpostei, do these lag events happen during high action or complex scenes where a lot is going on or many players are in-view at once?

Do you have an anti-virus program that does periodic background scans?

Re: games starts to lag for no reason! (fps)

have you checked your battery settings?

sometimes inactivity is only sensed on the desktop and not when your gaming. so your harddrive or cpu or even the graphics is put into a low power state.
