Can no longer play FEAR or STALKER, but can play other games

Hi all. Specs first.

Athlon 2700+
Gig 2700 Ram
X700 Pro

My aging rig has served me well for a while now, however after picking up a used Dell 1905FP LCD monitor, I can't play either Stalker or Fear. I'm able to get into the game menu, see the opening cinematics, and adjust video options and what not, however as soon as the actual gameplay starts, I get some sort of "analog" error from the monitor and the computer re-boots itself. No error message, and the event viewer just tells me that there was an application hangup.

I find it strange because I played both of these games with no problems on my old 17in. CRT monitor. I can't imagine a monitor being the trouble but it's really the only hardware change I've made. I can play Gothic 2, Thief and several other older games with no problems.

I've tried different settings in the CCC panel, installed the latest version of Direct X, latest vid card drivers and sound. No malware or viruses and I keep the comp very clean. (defrag on a regular basis, empty temp files etc). Today however, I went to MSI to see if there was an update for my chipset, and after downloading MSI's software to see if there were any driver updates, as soon as the software tried to find the updates, it crashed the comp again. Same thing as while trying to play Stalker or Fear. Comp just rebooted on it's own.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I can't think of anything else to do other than re-installing Windows which I really hate to do.

Thanks very much.
