Poor Performance?
Ok so it seems my computer constantly gets awful performance on most games. It's relativily new also.
I have a 671T-M motherboard. 2 Gig's of ram. A geforce 8500 graphics card. Pentium D 2.8 Ghz Processor dual core. I tried playing Assassins creed and get around 9 frames per second with everything set to lowest on 800x600 or lower resolution. Also I have a random beeping sound while running 3d applications. It is a random beep as far as I can tell and normally is accompined by a few frame skips or a slowdown. I get the beep on ANY application basically. My cpu temputure at it's peak is 70 degrees celsius. The beep also comes from the computer itself not the speakers. On games such as half life 2 with steam it will freeze the entire computer randomly. The frames per second on that are generally good. I have reinstalled the entire computer and monitored all temputures to no avail. I'm not sure if my voltages are fine. My best guess is it would be a cpu bottleneck as it always happens when the cpu gets to a higher point. I have all the latest drivers also. Even on less intensive games though that I easily get 100+ FPS it still will have the beep with the screen having a slight pause. Their's no tearing or such on the screen so I ruled out the graphics card being a problem. I have a 480 watt powersupply. The only thing I haven't tried so far is using vista which I doubt would help the problem. Anyone have suggestions? |

Re: Poor Performance?
Hi, welcome to TSF.
It seems you've pointed out 2 of the possible problems. 1. A weak PSU 2. Your processor. It would be a good idea to check and post your voltages here. I have doubts as to if your current PSU is powerful enough for your system. The CPU temp is, in my opinion, somewhat high but this can also be caused by a weak PSU. You may use PC Wizard to check the voltages. Along with your voltages, could you post your PSU make and model and the amps on the 12v line.

Re: Poor Performance?
Voltage CPU : 4.08 V
+5V Voltage : 6.91 V +12V Voltage : 17.96 V VTT : 4.08 V VBAT : 4.08 V These are what their at while sitting on desktop. the +12v line says 18A -12v line says .8A The model is LC - 480A. 480W ATX Power Supply I believe it's a HYDRA. Last edited by ReaperOne1Two2; 08-11-2008 at 01:25 PM. |

Re: Poor Performance?
Recommended PSU Wattage: 396W that's still lower then the 480W the one I have should be fine.
I see now. As soon as it goes to load anything the useage jumps to basically 18 on the 12v. Last edited by ReaperOne1Two2; 08-11-2008 at 09:43 PM. |

Re: Poor Performance?
You should allow up to 30% extra on PSU's, which would mean 118.8w + 396 which is 514.8 , so your system should actually be running on a 550w PSU of decent quality. PSU's can actually loose wattage over time.
The 12v reading shouldn't actually go over 12.05 if the PSU has enough power. ***Correction: +12V should be in the 11.4V to 12.6V range A weak PSU can actually damage the system, so even if this isn't the cause of your poor performance, I'd recommend replacing it. Try and borrow a PSU (550w+) from a friend to see if it makes a difference.

Re: Poor Performance?
Acually, I take that back its not fixed. It does run alot quicker now. But the beeping is just alot less but it crashes quicker now on applications. Time just to return the whole thing and buy from somewhere else it isen't worth the trouble anymore.
