Homeworld 2 and AvP2

I've been having a lot of trouble with these two games. First, Homeworld 2 won't run: every time Idouble click it or let the autoplay thing from the cd the screen turns black as if its going to start then just shuts off and goes back to the desktop. I've changed the compatability mode to Xp (Ihave vista) and that doesnt work, and I've tried using the "nomovies" command in the properties, I've downloaded the 1.1 patch, and I have tried running it in a window to no avail.
Second AvP2 wont acknowledge the fact that I have the 1.4.0.7 thing so I can't get on the internet, it plays single player but thats it. I've downloaded the thing twice and saved it to different files each time i try it. The Sierraupdate thing has downloaded it once too and its still not working. I understand its an old game but theres gotta be a way to make it work.
Any advice on the two would be great
