FF VIII issues
Alright, I know this is an old game. After doing some searching, it seems with the newer operating systems, people have issues with the game. I am also having issues, and while I have searched numerous websites, I have yet to find a solution.
BTW, this isn't a pirated game, although it is an old copy that a friend gave me. I managed to install the game, and when I try to play, nothing happens. I have to ctrl+alt+dlt and close the non responding game. I downloaded the 1.2 patch, and clicking on the new .exe does the same thing unless I go into the FFVIII config and put it on software render instead of hardware. Once its on software render, it will actually start the game, and get all the way to the option of new game, continue, or credits. If I click on credits, it will scroll the credits....Continue will bring up the load game screen, but if I click on new game, it shuts down immediately. Goes back to windows, quits responding. Alright, I read a bit on here, and also did the 'first steps'. My system specs are: Dell inspiron 1521 Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit AMD Turion 64X2 1.9 GHz 4 GB DDR2 ATI X1200 series (I think its 1270) Newest Catalyst, and DX 9 Anyone have any ideas? Re: FF VIII issues
I can barely get it running under XP and wouldn't dare try it under Vista.

Re: FF VIII issues
I also get the lines. I think it's an nVidia thing.

Re: FF VIII issues
I was able to play both (FFVII and FFVIII) under XP with a Geforce 7800GT but for FFVIII I had to use the software renderer (ugly as hell). 640x480 16bit fullscreen, Hi-res animations, Hi-res fonts.
You may want to try the compatibility options : in XP it's right-click FF8.exe => properties => compatibility. In vista there's the Program Compatibility Wizard. Note that in your case the program seems to crash when it searches for the game CD, the problem may not be related to Vista.

Re: FF VIII issues
Well, I formatted vista and installed XP. FFVIII plays without any drivers or anything, although its a hit and miss...First time I ran it, it was perfect. Second time, it skipped and jumped, almost as if the cd was scratched. Next time it played fine, now I can't get it to stop skipping again. Who knows.
Since it will play on the same computer with a different operating system, leads me to believe its the OS or the drivers that the OS uses. :S |

Re: FF VIII issues
Ok, so I can play with either hardware or software render, and they both look virtually identical. I move faster on the world map with the software renderer, almost like squall is on crack. I fixed the choppiness by putting it into compatibililty for 98. I am going to download the dual core optimizer and see how that works.
Does anyone know if that will help with movies? Mine is booting me during the dancing scene with Squall and Rinoa...It will get as far as her apologizing and walking away, when she gets halfway away it quits responding. :( Anyone know of any suggestions for a fix? Nothing I can try will work (software renderer doesn't even get that far before it craps out, movie high or low res doesn't make a difference.) If not, is there a way to bypass the movie? |
