A little trouble with CS:S

Hey guys I could use a little help, I've been playing CS Source lately and I noticed, when I first load the game, or join/create a server, for the first couple minutes there is lag, that sometimes is unbearable. But after dealing with it for a few minutes I get steady frames around 35-40 again. And try as I might, I just can't figure out what the problem is.

Specs: (They're embarrassing, but the budget is TIGHT)
Pentium 4 1.6Ghz
512 DDR2
Nvidia 6500

Its not anywhere near a top of the line machine, but its gets the job done. Until I'm employed again anyway D:

Re: A little trouble with CS:S

It can be because you have low RAM, not all models, props, textures may of not been loaded into the RAM prior to the loading. And so its reading the rest of the game from the HDD until the system can place most of the background tasks into pagefile.

You could add some more RAM, another 512 should do the trick. But if you are really strapped for cash you can do the basics.
1) Defrag HDD
2) Check for HDD errors
3) Close any unnecessary background tasks

Sometimes as well this lag can be caused by your internet connection trying to find the quickest route to the server.
Are you sure its fps lag.

Re: A little trouble with CS:S

Yeah, I went through the basics, and I think you were right about the RAM issue, because I tested it out, and its when a new model gets rendered, yeah it is FPS lag I had a readout of the FPS showing like 5-10 when the new model came up. I guess I'll just pick up another stick of RAM next time I get a chance.

Thanks.

Yeah I will, I just ordered 2 gigs, because there was a rebate deal on Tiger Direct so it only cost 25+shipping

Re: A little trouble with CS:S

Hell yeah it was, I try to keep up with the TD deals via E-Mail. Keep in mind that RAM is PC5400, which although slower...is more expensive
But I have to use that until I pick up a new mobo.
