D3D initialization problem

Hi,

I am new to tech forums. My problem is a really frustrating one.

I used to have a laptop for 5 years and was able to play games, which ever supported it.

Now I have a desktop and the config. is.

Winxp sp2
Asus motherboard (P5N-MX) with integrated nVidia Geforce 7050/nforce 610i chipset with 512 mb inbuilt RAM
P4 core 2 duo processor of 2.4 ghz
System RAM - 2GB
DirectX 9.0C

Now the problem is that games like Civilization 4 which used to work on my laptop dont work on this new desktop. Other games like Sniper elite2, AOE3, Overclocked etc dont work any more.
The error that pops up is failed to initialise Direct 3d or incompatible hardware or check your graphic card. I bought nearly 10 games and only 3 worked like HALO: Combat evolved, Call of Duty 4 , Driver 3.

Please help how to get rid of this D3D error so that I can play and feel my money worth of investing.
