Arrow Question? Decent comp slow fps

Hi all, my system seems to be having some problems.i have a quad core 2.66, 8600GT, 4g ram, 500w power supply, and i'm running vista. When i play call of duty 4, settings normal, i get very choppy fame rates. Even when the graphics are turned down the lowest they are still choppy. I recently updated video drivers, with no change in performance. Any words of advice?

Re: Question? Decent comp slow fps

I suggest down grade to Xp. Vist requires double the graphics power with no advantages. Xp doesnt.

Re: Question? Decent comp slow fps

Hi vmeng11 and welcome to TSF,

The 8600GT is a low-end graphics card, which is why your experiencing low frames. The 7900GT can out performs this card.
I recommend upgrading to a 8800GT or higher if you want to play COD4 with smooth frames.
Note* You will need to upgrade your Power Supply to at least 600W with 32a on a 12v Rail.

Re: Question? Decent comp slow fps

An 8600GT is a very cheap version of the 8 series.

7600GT specs

* PCI-Express
* 90nm process, 177M transistors
* 128-bit GDDR3 memory interface
* 256 MB memory, other configurations possible
* Clocks for both vertex engine and core: 560 MHz
* Clocks for memory: 700 MHz (1.4 GHz DDR)
* 5 Vertex Shaders, 12 Pixel Shaders, 8 ROPs
* Peak Power consumption: 67W

8600GT Specs
* PCI-Express
* 80nm process, 289M transistors
* 128-bit GDDR3 memory interface
* 256 MB memory, other configurations possible
* Clocks for both vertex engine and core: 540 MHz
* Clocks for memory: 700 MHz (1.4 GHz DDR)
* 5 Vertex Shaders, 32 Pixel Shaders, 8 ROPs
* Peak Power consumption: 68W

As you can see the cards are very similar. The 8600GT was suppose to replace the 7600GT. All they have changed is the fact that it supports Shader Model 4 (7600 SM3.0) and DX10 (7600 DX9.0c)

These two new features now account for the cards performance. You are running COD4 in DX9 with SM3.0. While vmeng11 is running COD4 on an almost identical card but with high performance features (SM4.0 and DX10).

Re: Question? Decent comp slow fps

What about the 9600? Isn't that better than the 7900 GT and still a good price?

Re: Question? Decent comp slow fps

Yes the 9600GT is better than the 7900GT. But as its a cheep 9 series card any high-end features like SM4.0, DX10 or any Anti-Aliasing will have a heavy impact on the cards performance.
