FPS range to wide
When im playing a game (specifically counter strike and half life game) i get 100 fps constantly when there is little action. Whenever there is action i get 10 - 40 fps, even if the only thing on my screen is a few players doing nothing. I have done the following...
-I have formatted and installed windows -have up to date video drivers -turned off unnecessary services -only thing i have on is kaspersky antivirus Here are my specs Power Supply - Thermaltake TR2-430W, 430 watts, +12V rails... max. load(18 A), min. load(1.0A) Motherboard - Asrock P4VM8, Socket 478 for Intel CPU - Intel Celeron, 2.4 ghz RAM - unknown brand, DDR-SDRAM, 512 mb+256 = 768mb Video Card - Radeon x1650pro 512 mb AGP Hard drive - Western Digital 80gb Operating System - Windows XP Pro SP2 |

Re: FPS range to wide
If youre talking about hl2 games and cs-source you may need to get a better cpu or more ram. I could hardly ever get over 30fps with athlon xp2800+ (even with a good vid card). If you mean half-life 1, then its a different matter.

Re: FPS range to wide
The only thing you can do is lower the game's graphics settings and hope it helps. I used to have a Radeon x1600 Pro, and transparent objects on the desktop would dramatically affect the frame rate of my games. The solution to this was to take care of all the little bubbles coming out of my systray telling me about automatic updates. You could also set windows to performance mode, disabling all the GUI visual effects.

Do the fans make more noise when the FPS drops? Maybe things are running too hot. You could also have a weak PSU/power box. If your computer's PSU can't supply enough juice to the hardware you have installed, things will slow down like you describe.
All I can suggest is update the drivers, get a better PSU, or even replace the video card. Last edited by af3; 06-19-2008 at 06:12 AM. |

For example, I think Quake 4 caps the FPS at 60.
Get the "SpeedFan" utility and take a look at it's temp readouts. It will have a flame icon near a reading that is too high. http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php Last edited by af3; 06-19-2008 at 11:49 AM. Reason: Added URL |

Maybe that had something to do with their original target console. (PS2) It appears to be a "straight port" of the game to PC, or an emulated version for the PC. (In my opinion) GTA2 also had a frame limiter. I remember when I bought my first nVidia card, and the cars were flying across the screen so fast that they were motion blurs!
SA:MP is fun too by the way.

the gameplay was exactly the same, but the graphics and sound were updated for the PC version. and the controls too. The most i've hit without frame limiter is about 80 so it's not too bad, even a lot smoother.

Re: FPS range to wide
my computer is really basic. I have very few things running and I disabled alot of services. So virtually im only running system services that are essential. There is no bubble that comes from the system tray. I think its a video card probably cause when my game starts to stutter my mouse pointer is still very smooth but my game is still stuttering.
