Freezing with buzzing or screeching
Hey guys, I've looked through Google and this website for weeks on end trying to find a possible solution for my nightmare of a rig, but I simply can't figure this thing out. Here's what happens: on any graphic intensive game after a random interval of time passes, the game will freeze with either a buzzing noise or a repeated sound loop of my last immediate action with screeching. The more graphic intensive the game is, the faster it happens (Unreal Tourny 2004 freezes 10% of the time, Battlefield 2 freezes 50% of the time, Gears of war freezes after about 5-10 minutes of playing)
Things I've Tried: 1) It's not the cooling. I have two high-powered fans installed on my case and GPU temps never rise above 72 degrees. I even bought a newer fan just to make sure 2) I've updated my motherboard, sound card, video card and every other thing that could possibly be updated...it is all up to date. Official versions too, nothing is a beta patch. 3) I've tried cleaning out my interior with a compressed air canister...wasn't much dust. 4) I've run memtest twice, but came up with no errors. 5) Power supply is more than adequate, forget the name and model but its 600-700 Watts of power....more than enough for my rig. I've read somewhere that I might need to change the voltage and DRAM timing in my BIOS, but I don't know exactly what to change them to (system specs will follow in a few) Also, someone mentioned memory aperture on the video card, but again, I don't know what value I would need to change it to. And form time to time, upon startup the background will have pixels that are out of wack/not colored in properly resulting in multi-colored dots across my screen...this problem corrects itself if I start up a game and then exit. Please help me. I've been having this problem for a very long time now and I just want this POS bucket of bolts to run BF2 and Gears of War smoothly again. System Specs: Mobo: ASUS P4S800D-X GPU: Nvidia GeForce 7800 GS Soundcard: Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 Hard Drives: (2) - Maxtor 6Y080P0 (76.3 GB) - ST316082 7AS SCSI Disk Device (149 GB) RAM: (2) Two sticks of 1GB each of the Titan series I believe, need to find the box again, post will be updated with this info ASAP. Changed out my previous RAM for this new set as the last one was giving me problems. OS: Windows XP Service Pack 2 Nothing is overclocked to my knowledge, unless it is OC by factory make Thanks! |

Re: Freezing with buzzing or screeching
Hi OmgBattleToads, welcome to TSF
I have checked out your problem, and i am 100% confident it is not a lack of hardware, as i have a lesser rig than that and i can run some of the games you specify on fairly high spec. So the Hardare should be able to handle it. Which leads me to another source of the problem, which is a system lockup. The symptoms you point out are indicative that this may be the case, but that does not explain the pixels that do not colour correctly on boot. We can look at that later. To see if it is a system lockup, run the games as you would normally, and when the problems you describe happen, let the pc run its course, but the instant it happens take a look and see what state your hard drive light is showing - is it fully coloured for a prolonged period of time or does it intermittently blink? Cheers TheAtheist

Re: Freezing with buzzing or screeching
Seems like a sound suggestion, but I looked at my casing and the light...seems to have burnt out. Is there any other way to tell if it's a hangup or not?
Also, I dicovered an unknown device in my device manager. I couldn't tell what it was for, it just says Multimedia Audio Controller. I uninstalled all drivers for it because I already have a sound card, but the Hardware Wizard keeps finding something everytime I boot up the computer... |

Re: Freezing with buzzing or screeching
Any Chance of a PrintScreen of the unknown device in Device manager,so we can have a look see what it is, as it could very well be this is aggrevating the problem. Cheers

Re: Freezing with buzzing or screeching
UPDATE: Memory I believe are 2 Kingston 1GB DDR2 sticks....anyways, heres the screenshot of the device manager. The question mark device is the one in question, I can't figure out what part of my hardware this is...

Re: Freezing with buzzing or screeching
hmm, my oversight, but that doesnt help as much as i thought it would. Anyway, do you know the name of your Sound card and can you find this on the other parts of the device manager. This should tell us wether the device in error is actually your sound card or if its something else.
If it is your sound card, post back with the name and make and we'll find you the latest drivers for it to make sure this isnt the cause. Cheers TheAtheist

Re: Freezing with buzzing or screeching
Hi omgbattletoads,
In your next reply, along with what TheAtheist has requested, could you post your voltages and temperatures. I know you're sure it's not a heating issue, this is just to make absolutely sure that that is the case and that your PSU is functioning correctly. Both these readings can be obtained using PC Wizard - http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php

Re: Freezing with buzzing or screeching
As I said before, it's NOT the heat, Rivatuner clocks the temperature as never going above 70 in the most graphic intensive games I have. I took a screenshot of voltages and temperature using PC Wizard in a post above.
Any other suggestions? |

Re: Freezing with buzzing or screeching
Yeh man he is right. 55 degrees is way too hot bro. Processors will generally run without damage up to 90 degrees depending on the model. However high temperatures vastly reduce your systems performance. I would consider a water cooling solution, because even the best air cooled solutions (Tuniq Tower 120) arent really enough. If you really want maximum stability and temperatures for your games you should purchase a 225W peltier from www.dangerden.com and attach a water cooler to the hot side.
