COD4 keyboard/mouse lockup
Here are my specs
PSU=Corsair HX-620 watt CPU=AMD Athlon X2 5000+ 2.6ghz(dual core) RAM=2xCorsair XMS PC 800 DDR2(2 gigs total) MOBO=Biostar NF520-A2 socket AM2 GPU=ATI Radeon x1650 PRO 512 RAM PCI-E Sound=integrated Mouse=Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16826105063) Keyboard=This is a very old generic HP keyboard that came with a comp I bought years ago. There is no particular name for it, all I can say its a model 5181. My problem is.......Occasionally while playing COD4 I just lock up........it isn't the comp that locks up. I simply lose control of both my keyboard and mouse. My computer continues to run fine, in fact the game keeps going. I can hear explosions,I can see other people fighting, I can lower my volume, etc. Everything works absolutely fine aside from losing complete control of the mouse and keyboard. Ctr+Alt+Del doesnt work....Alt+F4....nothing...I can't move my screen with my mouse....nothing. Since my mouse is wireless there are buttons to "connect" the mouse with its receiver, using these buttons do not fix the problem once it locks up. I just lock up and continue to run until I hit a wall and somebody runs by to shoot me. I have to use the system reset button on the front of my computer to restart the computer to get any control back. There doesn't seem to be a trigger for this.....I can't identify a pattern but it does seem to do it again in about 20-40 minutes after it happens the first time. And from there its too often to enjoy the game. This NEVER happens outside of COD4. About a month or two ago I replaced my mobo/cpu/ram/PSU with what I have now just because it was time to upgrade my hardware. The problem DID NOT start immediately, but it NEVER happened before this. Thankyou and I would really appreciate some help. |

Re: COD4 keyboard/mouse lockup
The fact that its both mouse and keyboard would suggest to me that there is a compatibility problem with some software resently installed. Maybe try to delete your drivers for keyboard and mouse and reboot.
You will find both drivers in your device manager. Make sure your motherboard drivers are up to date also. Try it and see if it helps. Last edited by Mack : 04-18-2008 at 04:28 PM. |

Re: COD4 keyboard/mouse lockup
It's a brand spankin' new mobo, but I will take a look to see if the drivers have been updated since. Re-installing mouse software shouldn't be an issue, I still have the CD and i'm sure microsoft has it on their site anyways. As I stated above, the keyboard is atleast 6 years old and is generic. Its just an old HP piece of crap keyboard that came with a comp I bought. So i'm not sure that there is even drivers for this thing, in fact i'm pretty damn sure there aren't. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Re: COD4 keyboard/mouse lockup
Each piece of hardware has a driver. Otherwise your pc wouldn't recognise it. These drivers are installed automaticly by windows without a disk so yes there are drivers for the keyboard which is why i said delete it and reboot. Windows will detect the keyboard and install a fresh driver for it.
If the keyboard is as bad as you say then it would have made sence to try a different one before posting. Get a new one. |

Re: COD4 keyboard/mouse lockup
How are the keyboard and mouse connected to your computer (usb?). Also make sure you have the latest MS patches and game patches.

Re: COD4 keyboard/mouse lockup
The keyboard is connect directly to the comp via PS/2. The wireless mouse receiver is connected via a USB converter to PS/2. So both are PS/2. I keep up to date with MS updates the moment they come up. I am running V 1.5.549 in COD4.
Some additional information........two days ago the instant I double clicked COD4 MP and the main menu came up I heard the blood curling "DUN!" that windows makes when theres an error. It instantly froze at main menu of COD4 with no visible cursor, interestingly as I moved the mouse around at certain points of the screen the cursor became visible, I believe this is because it was above the windows error message. I had to hard boot it and then windows went ape **** on me. For the first....5-7 restarts it told me there were windows files that were located in windows/system/config that were missing or corrupt. FINALLY it got to the disk check screen somehow and spent it spent literally hours spitting out this bullshit. "Bad links in lost chain at cluster 8931 corrected. Bad links in lost chain at cluster 8932 corrected. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 8933. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 8934. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 8935. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 8936. Orphan truncated." Difference is my cluster numbers started at 13,000. Overall about half of them were "orphan truncated" and half were "corrected." I turned my monitor off and watched tv for about 3 hours only to find that its STILL spitting this stuff out. It had gotten up to 150,000. I did a hard reboot while it was doing that and everything has worked absolutely fine since, it booted right up. Also....yesterday for the first time after this mysterious keyboard/mouse lockup I regained full control 5-10 seconds later. I don't recall changing anything since my last lockup and I did the same thing I always do which is just push buttons and try to kill the program. I am going to delete my mouse and keyboard drivers after this post and reinstall them and try playing and I will post back with the results. I also have a question about my motherboard. I have a Biostar NF520-A2 according to the manual, the box and newegg. Yet when I run Dx diag it tells me the model is "NF61D-A2." Sisoft sandra also tells me its "NF61D-A2." Although i'm positive its an NF520-A2 there are three options for this board on the Biostar site. There are drivers for "NF520-A2 G" "NF520-A2 G+" and "NF520-A2 G SE." I do not know specifically which one mine is and I don't know how to find that out. Last edited by Hangwire : 04-19-2008 at 10:44 AM. |

Re: COD4 keyboard/mouse lockup
I would suggest backing up your data. You may have a failing hard drive. Let me know how you go.

Re: COD4 keyboard/mouse lockup
Reinstalled all mouse/keyboard/video drivers/software yesterday and played for about 3 hours with no problem. This doesn't mean were out of the muck yet though, sometimes this problem goes dormant for days. Further...about my motherboard....I downloaded Everest and it says i've got an NF520-A2 chipset so i'm good on that. My problem is I don't know how to figure out if its an "NF520-A2 G" "NF520-A2 G+" or "NF520-A2 G SE." It isn't clarified in the manual or in benchmark/spec programs so i'm not sure what drivers to download.
