[SOLVED] Games suddenly stop working with Vista
I am running vista on my gaming machine, and until now I have had no serious problems, but in the past 2 days most of my games have stopped working.
First of all after 30 minutes Call of duty 4 will just go blank, and my back lit keyboard will turn off. And if it dose not do that my computer will just freeze, which is weird because I have run it for about a month with no previous problems. Now that I can't play Call of duty 4 I have tried to play some older games, but all of the older games that I have tried have been visually messed up (when i move huge black squares show up and weird colors take the place of the old colors). I first thought that this was just portal, then I tried some other games and every one did the same thing. Even solitaire and minesweeper are doing it! I have done some virus scans and turned up with nothing. For now I will be stuck with my mac but no games. KC |

Re: Games suddenly stop working with Vista
i think i know, its vista, vistas just mediocre except for wpf (formally known as Direct x 10) well thats just one of my thoughts, another is to do with vista, since its new they haven't worked out one of the bugs, so you must have opened an exploit up or something and made an unstable vortex of vista graphics (i like saying stuff like that) but it could also be the video card.
Also whats your system specs (including cpu fan/heatsink) it could be overheating, I've had a similar problem with cpu overheating, but i fixed it, also does it happen mostly on loading screens? if so its defiantly overheating. Last edited by groudon185p; 04-12-2008 at 05:26 AM. |

Re: Games suddenly stop working with Vista
Thanks, it was my graphics card. The fan was stopped by a wire that was hitting it and when I touched the card it left a nice little red mark on my hand. Oh well, it was only a GeForce 6600 gt.
I needed an excuse to buy a new card anyway. Kc |

Games suddenly stop working with Vista For those still needing a solution
What I have found out yesterday 9/30/09 is that most people who start out with Vista have Service Pack 1. Then out of the blue (and I don't know exactly when) Service Pack 2 downloads and all games quit working when they worked before. This happened to me too.
1. I restored Vista and my computer to factory settings. 2. I installed all of Microsoft Updates (and I mean all of them) 3. Installed all of my software and games back on. 4. Games work again. I did end up with an error afterwards with Internet Explorer not opening at all after I did all of this. If this occurs, here is the solution.... 1. Open Internet Properties. 2. Click on the security tab. 3. Uncheck the box that says "enable protected mode" it will give you a warning about your computer not being protected, ignore it. The next steps will fix it anyway. 3. Go to the advanced tab. Click on the reset button at the bottom (not the restore). When the box opens check the box and click next. This restored my browser and I have not had any problems with games or browser since. |
