All games freeze system without fail in 1 to 80 minute range.

Alright, general problem description. Every game I play, even something as old as WC3, my computer systematically crashes. It waits anywhere from a couple of minutes to an hour, but it is guaranteed to crash with a distorted looping sound coming from the speakers. The crash is complete, I have to physically press the reboot button to get the computer to respond.

This does not occur during benchmark tests such as 3DMARK. This does not occur during system stress tests such as one provided by NVidia control panel. If I quit the game before the crash occurs, it's as if the "crash timer" resets itself (I managed to squeeze out 3 hours out of a game like Command and Conquer 3 before it crashed under 20 minutes of play). There is no overheating occurring according to the temperature monitors. The Event Log is clean of errors, period.

System specs:

PSU: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?sku=A1311579&cs=19&c=us&l=en&dgc=SS&cid=28139&lid=644111
Motherboard: Asus P4PE (6 PCI, 1 AGP, 3 DDR DIMM) ; Intel Brookdale i845PE
CPU: Intel Pentium 4, 2800 MHz (14 x 200)
RAM: 512 MB (PC2700 DDR SDRAM) (Frequency - 333)
Storage: Maxtor 4W100H6 (100 GB, 5400 RPM, Ultra-ATA/100)
Storage: WDC WD1200JB-75CRA0 (111 GB, IDE) (OS installed here)
OS: Windows XP; Service Pack 2
GPU: 6600GT NVIDIA
Network Adapter D-Link AirPlus DWL-G520 Wireless PCI Adapter(rev.B)
BIOS: ASUS P4PE ACPI BIOS Revision 1006
Soundcard: Creative SB0090 Audigy Platinum Sound Card

Now, history of events (not exact, sorry, but should give general idea):

These specs are identical to what I have had 6 months ago, except for a smaller hard drive, (the WDC was 90GB, otherwise nearly identical), 350 watt PSU, and an Intel Pentium 4 (2.4GHz) Processor, and a 6800 GeForce. All games worked. The 6800 crashed and burned, died (probably damaged by couple of instances of overheating prior, no actual verdict, though). It was replaced by the card you see in these system specs.

Fast forward to a month ago. My father's computer was fried by a power surge. He cannibalizes the computer and donates a 7600GT, 4 512Mb 400MHz RAM sticks, the CPU you see in the system specs, and the PSU you see here.

Actual order of installation - RAM, GPU Card, update drivers, a couple hours of gaming, Power Supply, CPU, reinstall CPU because I discovered it was overheating to 70ish degrees due to bad thermal paste application. No problems during all of that except for the CPU overheating, which was fixed now that I properly applied the paste.

After however...

First day, the games ran fine. Second day, games like Tiberium Wars and Universe at War crashed in manner I described above. After a while, general system instability started occurring. Computer started randomly crashing everywhere after loading windows. Couple crashes later (in safe mode, no less) while trying to figure out what's wrong, the old WDC hard drive is corrupted. It is replaced with the donated one you see in system specs (relatively new). It is formatted, and Windows XP is reinstalled. More fun happens in 3, 2, 1...

After installing the essentials (setting up connection to the wireless network, service packs, security upgrades, AVG 7.5 anti virus, Daemon Tools, drivers), I install some (Tiberium Wars, Dawn of War, Warcraft 3, etc.), some from actual CDs and some from CD images (yes, all bought, some backed up as images). General system instability is rediscovered when playing them. The computer just randomly crashes after booting Windows. After doing some research, I immediately suspect Daemon Tools, specifically STPD.sys related crashes. I clean my computer of any trace of it existing, virtual drivers wiped, etc.

Instability gone. Computer seems to work fine and in working order, no errors, no crashes, etc. I try playing the games again, and while instability is gone the exact same crash as described in this topic in the beginning occurs. So, identical crash. Event log is clean as a whistle. As I tried various setting tweaking, no luck. I remove AVG, still crashes. Reinstall AVG and Daemon Tools, same crashes. At least the instability is gone and my computer is in working order.

While trying to figure out what's wrong, I discover that the 7600GT is damaged. The Event Viewer finally coughed up an error for such a crash, and it was an NVidia loop error of sorts. Before I could diagnose it further, that same reported loop error was apparently the herald of the card actually dieing - exact same symptoms as my old card that died of overheating. I load up windows, there is a flash of pretty, pixelated, and distorted colors on the monitor and the BSOD. I replace the 7600GT with 6600GT.

The crashes related to the card are gone, and I am back to the random in-game crashes. I ran the computer through NVidia control panel stress tests, nothing shows up. 3dmark, nothing. Clueless I am.

Now I suspect the memory sticks. My suspicions are proven correct when 2 of the 4 sticks (the ones I didn't use) I was given turned out to be physically damaged and did not work. Using them caused the system to hang immediately after booting and they nicely crashed the memtest. Fearing similiar for the two sticks i was actually using, I ran them through 10 hours of memtest each. Both had errors. I took 'em out, put the original RAM stick in (you see this one in the specs posted above). The memtest saw nothing wrong with it. The games still crash, event log clean, the system is stable, nothing is overheating, stress tests and memtest and 3dmark show there is nothing wrong.

Lastly, I tried screwing around with the drivers, tried rolling back to various old versions; no success. I am desperate, I have no clue what's wrong, and now I turn to you for help.

WHAT THE IS WRONG WITH THIS COMPUTER?!

It's not the graphics card. It's not the RAM. It's not the PSU. It's not the Hard drives. The various tests are saying it's clean as a whistle. Freshly formatted and reinstalled windows. No overheating. Driver versions for the sound card and the video card are irrelevant. System is stable.

-Is it the CPU? I have no idea, I would think if there was CPU damage the computer wouldn't work in the first place. Stress tests show nothing.

-Is it the motherboard? It's old, I suspect it, but you would think there would be signs outside of video games.

-Is it the sound card? I have no idea, it never gave me problems. Stress tests show nothing.

-No viruses or spy ware. Computer, as I said, is clean.

Is it just too old to work? Doesn't make sense, it's working fine outside of specifically 3D games. If I knew it was a problem with the graphic card or RAM, I would just buy the replacements I was planning and get it over with. Please, for love of all that is holy, help.

What else could possibly be causing all video games, without fail and disregarding driver version, to crash in a manner that locks up the entire system?

Re: All games freeze system without fail in 1 to 80 minute range.

Update and a bump of sorts. Please help :(

I finally found an error while checking over my system log after a crash.

System Error Category (102) Event 1003
Error code 1000008e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 f45b7a0f, parameter3 ba4618d8, parameter4 00000000.

Does this mean anything to anyone? There might be a possibility that a similar error happens with every crash, but I see no records except for this single one.

Re: All games freeze system without fail in 1 to 80 minute range.

Well, it wasn't much help from here; but if someone else pops up with a similar problem; I think I found a fix.

Installation of the Sound Blaster Audigy driver was somehow screwed up; not sure by what - whenever it was the faulty RAM or various Windows XP.

Multiple reinstalls failed to fix it, but what didn't was a reinstall when I had all the faulty RAM out and when I followed this specific guide for uninstalling:

http://193.95.171.83/wwenglish/audio...tall_audio.htm

Basically, the moral of the story, make sure you safeguard the CD that came with your hardware. It might hold a useful program to help you clean up a botched up installation of drivers. It also helps not to perform any installations of anything unless you are sure your hand-me-down items are in full working order; that can possibly screw something and you won't even notice.
