[SOLVED] Oblivion Error Message

Okay, I bought a new computer and the game Oblivion which I BADLY want to play..

Here are my specs:
Windows XP 64-bit Edition
Asus P5K-VM with the Intel G33 Chipset
Intel E4500 @ 2.2 Ghz
1GB of ADATA DDR2-800Mhz RAM
I'm using the integrated graphics on the motherboard (Intel GMA 3100).

I installed Oblivion and I keep getting the same old error message:
Oblivion has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
(It's one of those error report messages)..

Anyway.. I BADLY want to play Oblivion.. I happen to have a 256MB PCI (not express) video card(It's really recent.. Geforce something) that I think would work with my motherboard if you think that's the problem...

Any Suggestions?

Re: Oblivion Error Message

That error message is pretty generic so its hard to say why does it show up. But your integrated graphic chip is most likely the problem - those things just are not for gaming.

Your geforce something with 256MB memory is probably way faster unit. But you say its not pci express. If thats true it will not fit into your motherboard. Anyways check what slot it is, options are PCI-E or AGP. If its PCI-E try that instead of integrated chip.

Re: Oblivion Error Message

Yeah.. I'll try it soon. Apparently,(According to my motherboard manual) I have 2 PCI slots, 1 PCI-E x4 slot, and 1 PCI-E x16 slot.. But I only see three slots.. :S. When I get my hands on that card (it's a Geforce 5500) I'll see if it fits.
Thanks.

Re: Oblivion Error Message

I think that card uses AGP-slot which that motherboard doesnt have :(

Just to clarify: very old (pre-2000) chips use regular PCI slot, which was then replaced by AGP (that I think your geforce card uses). Now PCI-Express slot has been introduced and new motherboards/cards use that for graphics (your new motherboard too). So Im afraid you will have no luck with that card.

Don't worry about that! I'm 100% positive the card is PCI so no worry. I just hope it's good enough.. It's a Geforce 5500..(I think I said that already) so It should be okay,

Re: Oblivion Error Message

Hmm yeah that might be true based on some googling. The card is pretty oldish though, barely reaching the Oblivion minimum. Still better than integrated :)

Re: Oblivion Error Message

Also, if you get the game running with gf5500, you might wanna take a look at oldblivion:

Re: Oblivion Error Message

Thanks for the help, u551. The Geforce 5500 FX ran Oblivion horribly.. so I downloaded Oldblivion and I got it working on integrated xD! I'm still going to use the Geforce 5500 FX seeing as it has a GPU and will free up the RAM that is shared.

Thank you so much!
