Help, new graphic card, bad online play

Hello,

I recently bought an ASUS EN8800GT (Nvidia GeForce).

So the PC support man put it in for me. And since I got the graphic card I can play Single Player games realy well, on high graphics and all. But when I turn to multiplayer my FPS stays the same as it was before I got the card, and on the same settings.
Here is what's in my PC.

Manufacturer: PC Express
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 1024MB RAM
Hard Drive: 104 GB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT
Monitor: Écran Plug-and-Play
Sound Card: SoundMAX HD Audio
Keyboard: G11 Gaming keyboard
Mouse: G9 Logitech gaming mouse
Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519)

I have a P5B ASUS motherboard

I've been told that my CPU is "Bottlenecking" my graphics card. That I should get a new CPU/processor, and enother GB of RAM.

But I don't know if this is true, I don't know much about PCs.

Can anybody tell me what I should do to make my PC play online better? Since online Nothing has changed, I'm still running the same settings and same FPS. But as I said SP is doing great. I play Call of Duty 4, Battlefield 2, and Battlefield 2142.

Thanks

Re: Help, new graphic card, bad online play

Definitely get more RAM! You should get AT LEAST another 1GB. A 3.0 GHz processor is just fine for the games you listed. I don't know where people get off saying that the CPU is bottlenecking the video card. In the old days the video card did not have its own CPU so the computers CPU had to do all the work for the program and the video. Now though, the video card has its own CPU and the computer CPU does not have to handle that part of the program any more. There is nothing wrong with the speed or your computer CPU and the video card and it should be just fine. But,the main thing it sound like to me is a Anti Virus program problem. Not that there is anything wrong with your AV program, it is just that when there is a lot of things going on in the game (i.e. helicopters, explosions, air support attacks, etc. etc.) there are a lot of packets coming in via the internet and your AV program is trying to scan them and can't keep up. I had this same problem and, I have seen this same problem with a lot of my friends too. All of their problems went away after they did this with their AV program. You should try either putting your AV program in snooze mode while you play the game or find some other way of deactivating it while you are in the game. Then go out and get yourself another 1 or 2 GB of RAM.

Re: Help, new graphic card, bad online play

Awesome! Thanks for the input guys. Ok now, how can I do this thing you guys call "Overclocking"? Does it cost?

And yeah I'm getting new RAM soon, another extra GB, but I can get 2 if you guys realy think I should. Also, I don't know what kind of RAM I need. And what should I do to get rid of the static electricity that builds up in a human body? Last time I open my PC case it cost me 700 francs

EDIT: Oh and I don't have an Anti-Virus program

Re: Help, new graphic card, bad online play

If you are not running an AV program (read more about that below) and you already have the minimum and up to the recommended system requirements for the game and are still having these problems on line, might I make a few more suggestions. You might want to download a copy of "Ad-aware" www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
and "Spybot" http://www.download.com/Spybot-Searc...-10122137.html
and run them after installing. These will remove any spyware that might be on your system and that might be tying up your bandwidth on your Internet connection. Just click on the two links above to get them. I recommend running both because one will find things the other won't. You might also want to get a "Windows Registry Cleaner" http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fil...cription.html#
which you can also find free on line and clean up your Registry too.

I think 1 more GB should be enough. That will make it so you will have twice the "RECOMMENDED" amount and quadruple the "MINIMUM" amount needed for the game. As far as what type?! You will have to find out what type of mother board you have and what type and size it accepts. You will have to find out how many slots ther are for the RAM and how many are already used. For example, if there are only 2 slots and you already have two 512 MB DIMMs in there, you will have to take them both out and buy to 1 GB DIMMs to put in their place. You mentioned that you had some PC Support person put the video card in for you. You might what him to find this stuff out for you if you can't find this information easily yourself.

As far as static goes, all you have to do is make sure you don't touch anything but the side edges of the RAM and before you do that you make sure that you touch some part of the bare metal of your case for a second after you unplug it and take off it side cover. If you are not real easy with this than I suggest that you also have that PC Support person do this for you too.

Shame on you for not having any AV program!!!! If you do any surfing on the Web or do any e-mailing, you should, no "MUST" have some kind of AV program running. You can download for free a program called simply AVG from this link HTTP://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Vir...dlpid=10760089 Then just remember to disable it when you run CoD4 and re-enable it when you quit.

I don't use any AV software. :)

What type of power supply do you have in there?

I also can't recommend overclocking of the CPU due to the already crazy heat the P4 dual-core chips let off.

Re: Help, new graphic card, bad online play

Ok, well I've decided to put two extra 1GB sticks in, but I'd rather do that all myself. Also what's overclocking? How will that help my PC? How can I do that?

Thanks alot guys!

Re: Help, new graphic card, bad online play

Overclocking is the process by which you increase the clock speed of you processor (eg. causing it to run at 3.2 Ghz instead of 3.0.) This can give performance boost without extra cost. However, the increased clock speed will cause the processor to produce more heat. Unless you have a good cooling system in your pc, it is often a bad idea to overclock because the processor will overheat. I agree with ebackhus that on stock cooling, overclocking a P4 is a bad idea due to the amount of heat the processor puts out.

So, in short, overclocking can be useful, but you should probably not attempt to overclock at least the CPU in your current system.

Re: Help, new graphic card, bad online play

System is 36C

CPU 47C

AUX 122C

HDO 39C

That's what I got.

No I'm getting confused. So I'm buy 2GB more RAM, but what should I do about my CPU? People say overlock, but it'll overheat, others say replace it. Anybody can resume this for me? Please :D
