Freezing DOS games
I know that for DOS games to run properly I should use a computer with DOS instead of Vista, but here's my story:
One of my hobbies is retro gaming, which mainly involves downloading abandonware DOS and C64 games and using emulators and programs such as DOSBox to allow me to play them in command prompt. This works fairly well, except for one game, Leather Goddesses of Phobos 2. I tried running it with DOSBox but it said that the install had failed and that either the hard disk was corrupt or there were missing files, even though there weren't any. I tried running the install directly (it was a simple .exe file), and got an error message about Vista not supporting fullscreen mode (which I solved using the 2nd option in this workaround: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/0...windows-vista/ ). Once that obstacle was removed, I was able to install and configure the game without any issues. I then ran one of the other apps in the group of files (MADE.exe), which started the game. After a short intro showing the Infocom logo and some Infocom games, it gave me a window to choose characters. I did so and then it showed me another short intro showing a meteor hitting the earth. Just before it would have hit, the game froze (with the meteor hanging in the air and my cursor stuck in the same spot). I know this is fairly lengthy, but I just wanted to give enough background information that you could at least make an attempt to help me. To muddy the waters even more, the game had with it what appeared to be an emulator for Amiga, which brings up the question of whether it was even intended for DOS at all. In case you want to experiment yourself, I don't remember where I downloaded it from, but you can find it by going to thepiratebay.org and searching for "Classic Adventure games" (requires a Torrent download client). I'd be extremely grateful if you could help me with this. |
