DVD Drive Problems

Hello, I have a DVD-ROM game I am trying to install with my computer.
Which is a Dell diminsion 4550.

The problem that I am getting is when I try and open up the game to install it all I am getting is "Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatibvle with Windows."

So as you can see I cannot install the game if I can't even get it to be read. Any help on this problem would be appreciated.
Thanks

Re: DVD Drive Problems

Hi, welcome to TSF

Have you tried the disk in another drive or on another computer? Is it an original or a backup copy? Do you have any virtual drives installed? Can you see the contents of the disk in Windows Explorer?

Re: DVD Drive Problems

I can't use the disk on another computer my laptop just died unfortunately. I cannot see the disk in windows explorer. It is the original copy brand new. And I don't know for sure if I have a virtual device installed.

I am completely lost on what to do.

Re: DVD Drive Problems

The first thing to do before reinstalling chipset drivers, IDE controllers, etc is to check the disk on another computer, just to see if the contents show up.

Can your DVD drive read other disks?

What's your motherboard make/model? Is the DVD drive IDE or SATA? Did you build the computer yourself or have you made any recent hardware upgrades?

Ok I just installed a 512 mb chip of ram.
I do not know how to check the mother board make and model.
And the question you asked about the DVD drive I have no idea.
Sorry I'm a little bit of a noob when it comes to computers.
And I did not build this computer myself it is a Dell Dimension Desktop 4550.
The only thing that I touched was the ram.

I also do not have another computer I could try and read the disk off of.

Re: DVD Drive Problems

Everest wil give you your computer's full details in Computer > Summary.

When you put any other DVD or CD into the drive, can you see the contents in Windows Explorer, and does the drive have an icon below the C drive?

Switch off and open the case. Look at the cable connecting the DVD drive to the motherboard. Is it a flat grey ribbon cable or a thin red cable? Make sure it's firmly connected at both ends. If it's a 40-wire IDE cable, replace it with an 80-wire one.

If it's a ribbon, then it's IDE and you may need to reinstall the IDE controller driver from your motherboard CD.

When you put any other DVD into the drive, can you see the contents in Windows Explorer, and does the drive have an icon below the C drive?

I'm logging off now (2am). If you get no more replies, I'll check back again tomorrow.
