UT3/CoD4 download issues

I've been having the same problem in both UT3 and CoD4. When I try to play on an online server with mods or custom files both games crash at what appears to be right before the map starts to load. Any help would be appreciated. I'm guessing it's a problem with Vista but I haven't been able to find anything.

System Specs

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz
Memory: 2046MB RAM
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS

Its probably security settings within the game. Are the servers non-dedicated or non-punkbuster(or any other kind of anti-cheat)?
And can you play on servers which dont require custom files?

I can play on servers without custom files, but both games are moving away from those kind of servers. CoD4 has punkbuster, ut3 does not, but I crash in the same spot on both.
