EEK! [SOLVED] Game & PC Problems

Hey everyone. The problem I am having is not only game related, but my whole pc is screwing itself. The problems I am having for each game are this:

Battlefield 2: Sound skipping lag, Computer sometimes restarts while playing, Crashes.

Call of duty 2: Sound skipping lag, Freezing (Not responding), Computer sometimes restarts while playing.

CS:S,DOD:S,HL2:DM: Hl2.exe error, computer sometimes restarts while playing.

Call of duty 4: modern warfare demo: When I aim with any weapon the whole screen blurs out and its hard to see anything.

The weird thing is, I just got this computer last year, so its basically brand new. My computer reboots itself on the desktop also, or just surfing the net, and the mouse lag and sound skipping also happens on the desktop, while listening to music or watching videos on youtube, a reboot usually fixes this but then it happens another time.
-------------------------------------------------
I have updated my graphics card drivers, reinstalled them and re applied, DX9 is up to date, up to date sound drivers. I have reformatted numerous times, and the problem still occurs. I am just about ready to throw this computer out the window.

I am not sure about the ramps and volts on my PSU but i know that its either 500watts or 550 watts.

I posted the DX-Diag log, so take a look at it. Thank you in advance and I hope you can help me fix these annoying problems.

Re: Game & PC Problems

Hi, and welcome to TSF.

The first thing that leaps out at me is your power supply. Please click on "Posting System Specs" in my signature, and follow the steps there to post your full specs - especially the details of your power supply. 500 - 550W is not really enough to be running an E6600 and an 8600GTS on - I would be recommending 600 - 700W at least. If you read this thread, you'll see that your PC falls into the "Power Desktop Computer" range, for which a 600 - 650W PSU is recommended. Also, if you don't have a high-quality power supply, it likely won't be delivering even its stated 500 - 550W.

All the symptoms you are experiencing are usually caused by under-powering the system. Not enough power to the components means everything slows down (lag and skipping) and the parts heat up (causing crashes, blue-screens, artifacts, etc). It will also cause long-term damage, which can cost you a whole new system.

Hey, thanks for the welcome. First off I am completely outraged that the technician that built my PC put a 550W power supply, I had no idea that it was reducing the performance of my system and causing this.

Re: Game & PC Problems

I would definitely be changing that power supply. ATRIX is not a high-quality brand - for example, compare the specs on these two Silverstone units with the specs of your unit: 560W; 500W; (specifically the amps per +12V rail). My personal preference in brand is Silverstone, but you can find excellent recommendations in that power supply thread I linked to above. I would get a 650W at least - higher if you plan to upgrade your system at all in the near future. As they say, it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it...

Hey, thanks for the help. Two questions, #1: Do you think that changing to a 650W+ PSU will make all the problems disapear? #2 I live in Sydney, NSW, Australia, How much do you reckon i can get a good quality PSU for, because yeah i might be looking to upgrade later this year, and id like to have more then 750W, more power the better!

Re: Game & PC Problems

1) Yes, I think replacing the power supply will fix your problems. Whether it does or not, though, it's important to do so to prevent further problems down the track.

2) Have a look here. You can get Silverstone units from those guys -

850W - $239
750W - $205

They're based in Perth, but they should ship to Sydney.

In the meantime, download and install Everest (in my signature) and use it to check the temperatures and voltages of your system. They can be found under Computer -> Sensor. Check the values just after starting up, and then again after a few minutes in a game. Record all the values and post them here for us, as that will give us more insight into what the problem is.

Re: Game & PC Problems

Okay, I think i have made a decision as to which PSU I will get to replace the 550W. Either the SILVERSTONE 750W STRIDER MODULAR or the SILVERSTONE 850W STRIDER MODULAR.

I have two questions again. 1) Will the 750W be more than enough to power everything in my PC without the problems reoccuring?

2) Will I need the 850W if I put in a 8800GT-512MB or another 8600GTS in SLI or will the 750W be enough?

Thanks for your time.

Joey
