DirectX Problem with Games

Hey guys, I recently sent my computer in to get viruses, adware, spyware, etc. off my computer as well as my registry fixed, and now I have errors when starting up and game whether it be CoD4 or Warcraft 3. I get the following error message.

Warcraft 3 was unable to initialize directX. Please ensure directX 8.1 or higher is installed.

and for CoD4 I get a message saying it must be shut down due to unrecoverable error. So far I have tried reinstalling directX from my CoD4 disc as well as reinstalling and updating to most recent driver on my graphics card. Nothing has worked thus far. Any help guys?

Re: DirectX Problem with Games

When they repaired the registry they may of deleted some entries for the games, the best thing to do would be to backup your saved games and uninstall reboot then install the games.

Re: DirectX Problem with Games

I tried reinstalling a few of my games, and I installed cod4 for the first time, and it still doesnt work. Now I am constantly getting blue screens saying theres a problem with windows, so I guess my next step is to reinstall windows xp pro, the installation is on my comp hard drive, but I don't know where to find my key to install it, because I dont believe I got one when I ordered my comp from alienware.

Is there a way to find my authentication key on my comp for windows?

Re: DirectX Problem with Games

Post the blue screen error message in full, including the Stop code. This will give us a better idea what's causing the problem, so it might not be necessary to reinstall Windows yet.

You can find your Windows CD key using Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder.

Re: DirectX Problem with Games

For the blue screen I only have time to read the top line saying theres a problem with windows before it goes away and windows restarts.

As for the link for the key finder, after clearing 32 viruses, and over 900 spyware off my comp, it makes me nervous clicking links I dont know anything about :(

Re: DirectX Problem with Games

To see the blue screen message without the computer restarting, go to Control Panel > System > Advanced tab > Startup & Recovery Settings button > System Failure and remove the checkmark from 'Automatically restart'.

The link is safe and the program contains no spyware. We regularly recommend its use for recovering CD keys. See here for the McAfee Site Advisor report for the site.

EDIT: You still have answers in 3 other similar threads waiting for you to reply. The problems might all be related.

Re: DirectX Problem with Games

Thanks for the replies guys, since some other things come up for me, I decided I didn't have time to work on it myself and sent it back in to get fixed. I appreciate all the help though.
