Portal and DirectX

Hi, I have recently just got Portal from Steam so I downloaded it all right started it and it came up with an error that I did not have DirectX 8.0. I'm currently using good ol' XP and Microsoft insists on saying that XP comes with it. I have googled everything I could imagine to fix the problem. DirectX 10.0 wouldn't install and 9.0C it's blaming cabinets.

First do you have a DirectX 9 compatible graphics card?

But it seems I don't have the requirments to play it according to Yougamers this is the message:

Display Card: DirectX 8 compatible graphics card

It appears that I do in fact have DirectX 9.0. I can play sims 2 perfectly but portal still insists on not letting me play.

The card you have, the GeForce MX, does not support any form of PixelShader which is REQUIRED by Portal.

hi guys! i get the same error msg lawlamgad gets about directx when i try to launch portal...
it is true, i have an old graphics card, but i got to play half life 2 episode 1. Now half life 2 episode 2 and portal appear to not recognize direct x 9c installed on my pc and i am not convinced that this has something to do with my graphics card
