Re: battlefield 2 lock--ups

How long into playing does it take before the game crashes? Is it at the same point each time or when there's alot of action on-screen?

Check your voltages and temperatures with SensorsView or SpeedFan at startup with no other programs running. Then again while playing the game. Post back with BOTH sets of figures so we can compare idle and stress values.

Do the keyboard and mouse become unresponsive, and does the caps-lock light work on the keyboard when it crashes?

Do you have the latest patches for BF2, if there are any available?

Re: battlefield 2 lock--ups

What graphics card do you have? memory? power supply? CPU?

Is this single player, or multiplayer? Is the screen freezing, or is it "skipping", for instance as you said, your flying, and then suddenly your in the ground, is it locking up, and then unfreezing, when you hit the ground, or is there any pause between being in one place, then suddenly being in another? I would look to 1) your internet, check the ping on the server, 2) check what process are running while you are playing.

Re: battlefield 2 lock--ups

I have this same problem sometimes, I'll be flying around and my game will randomly crash. I suspect it has to due with heat problems (at least for my rig). So I would definately check that if I were you with a program like speedfan or others (Someone posted a link to a really good one earlier, but I can't find the link to it for the life of me).

Alternatively, you could try turning your graphics down and see if the game will last longer.

It is also possible your power supply could be failing you...hopefully the heat is your problem as it is easily (and cheaply) fixed.

Re: battlefield 2 lock--ups

If you run SpeedFan and post back with the temperatures and voltages during gameplay then we can can tell you if any components are too hot or if your PSU is causing the lockups. We can't do anything else until you post back.

How much free hard drive space is left? Do you defrag regularly?

Is your Vista 32bit or 64bit? The latest Vista 32bit driver for the Radeon X1600 is Catalyst 8.2. This is the 64bit version. Download the correct driver for your version of Vista.

There are 2 options. The first is a full package of display driver and control center, and the second is just the driver.

If you want to install the full package, you need to have Microsoft .NET Framework already installed. Download from here. Install and reboot. Then install Catalyst, following the instructions below.

If you just want the driver, use the Option 2 download link then follow these instructions.....

Go to Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager. Click the [+] next to Display Adapters, right click the graphics card entry and select Uninstall.

Close down all windows and programs. Reboot and keep tapping F8 while the computer is starting until you see the Advanced Options menu. Select VGA mode. When Windows has finished loading, the display will look strange. This is only temporary while using the standard VGA driver. Disable your antivirus and install the new driver. Reboot to complete.

Note: If you decide to install just the driver, you can use ATI Tray Tools which does basically the same job as the Catalyst Control Center, but uses less system resources and doesn't require the .NET Framework.

Re: battlefield 2 lock--ups

How much memory do you have? De-frag your hard drive, and do a disk clean-up. Are you running Aero theme? If so run windows classic.

Re: battlefield 2 lock--ups

Why are you going into BIOS? F8 is to bring up the Advanced Options menu so you can select VGA mode, nothing to do with BIOS.

Have you installed the Microsoft .Net Framework for Vista?

4.31GB out of 80GB is less than 15% free space, which is the minimum required for Windows to run efficiently. Free some space.

Your symptoms are pointing towards heat, PSU or drivers. I won't mention anything more complicated like RAM timings or BIOS settings until we can see your SpeedFan results. Are you having trouble running it?

Turn off the onboard sound. Running 2 sound devices can cause games to lag.

Is this during gameplay?

Is your first set of readings taken at startup with no programs running except SpeedFan?

Is the second set taken DURING gameplay, not after (when the values will have returned to normal)?

The +12V is hovering around the upper limits of the accepted range (11.4 to 12.6V) so we need to see what it's like under heavy stress from Battlefield 2.
