My computer freezes and the sound stutters for 30seconds

Hi, I'm having problems with some games I play. The screen freezes and the sound stutters for about 15-30 seconds then the sound stops for 5-10 seconds then the screen unfreezes and the sound goes back to normal then it will happen again and again. I play Warcraft 3 and it seldom happens. It usually happens when I play GTA3 and Half Life 2. I downloaded the november release of directx9.0c and installed it and it still happens. I met the system requirements for all the game I play. This does not happen when I play MMOs like Granado Espada. My PC specs are as follow:

CPU: Athlon XP 2500+
Memory: 1GB DDR
Video Card: Nvidia FX5200
Sound Card: SoundMAX Digital Audio

I did not install the latest nvidia driver as I have had bad experience before with the Forceware drivers. The version of the driver that I am using is 78.01

thanks!

Re: My computer freezes and the sound stutters for 30seconds

For Warcraft 3 your machine should play that one fine.

But as for the others I'm not surprised the game tends to freeze.

At what point does HL 2 freeze like that?

What settings do you have HL 2 set too?

Re: My computer freezes and the sound stutters for 30seconds

I've been able to run HL2 smoothly on lower machines before. I used the lowest setting on every category there is. I play the game smoothly for about 10-15minutes then at no apparent reason, the screen freezes for a few seconds while the sound stutters.
although it seldom happens, this also occurs while playing Warcraft 3.

Is anything in your machine overclocked?

Have you checked any temperatures? Those old Socket A motherboards can run pretty hot.

check your power supply

get a motherboard monitor software and check the +12v and +5 voltage sounds like its dropping in power under load

Re: My computer freezes and the sound stutters for 30seconds

nothing is overclocked. yeah it can get pretty hot. i think the CPU temp goes as high as 63 degrees celsius. is that high?
as for the power supply the +12v generates 12.43v while the +5v generates 4.70v, should this be a sign to buy a new PSU?
