FS2004 Crash to desktop

When I try and start up FS2004 I get the Flight Sim splash screen, then I briefly see the "Getting Started" main screen. It then crashes to desktop. I have patched FS2004 to 9.1 and still it crashes.

anything listed in the event viewer at the time of the crashes

it does not look to be hardware related one of the gamers needs to look in
