Sims 2 ati3duag.dll

I am hoping I am posting in the right thread spot. I have been trying to play Sims 2 for a few weeks. I have most of the expansions as well. I keep crashing during game play (sometimes right away, sometimes after a few hours---on and off play). I REALLY want to play this game normally, but am having these problems. My systems specs are as follows:

Dell Inspiron 16400
Intel core 2cpu
T5500 @ 1.66ghz
1.00 gb of ram

Ati Radeo X1400 with 256 mb of ram

I am not sure what else is needed, but I DO KNOW THAT THIS COMPUTER should play this fine. I have checked the drivers, all updated. I just want to be able to play this game. I am NOT a techy person, so I have NO CLUE what I am doing. If someone is to help me, I need step by step directions. I mean REALLY step by step. Thanks so much!
