Random shut off during high graphic games
Hey everyone,
I bought a computer a little less than a year ago. It has worked great until recently. Whenever I play a high end graphics game like the crysis beta or unreal tournament 3 demo the computer will just shut off and then I will have to wait a few minutes to start it back up. I don't know if it is overheating or what but I downloaded motherboard monitor and logged the temperatures while playing the game. I am not sure what the temperature of the CPU should be. I have attached the log file. Occasionally when I start the computer now it will say that there is a CPU fan error. Could this be causing the problem? I have the stock fan that came with the E6600 on it. It is still spinning as well. I was just looking for your input on the problem. Thanks! I wrote an email to the store I got it from and they said that the power supply might be causing it because of the readings. Here's the log file. +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |Total number of readouts: 580 CPU Speed: 2129 MHz | |Running from: 10/13/2007 6:12:31 PM until: 10/13/2007 7:48:34 PM | +-----------------------------+----------+----------+----------+----------+ |Sensor | Current | Low | High | Average | +-----------------------------+----------+----------+----------+----------+ |Case | 42° C | 30° C | 42° C | 39° C | |CPU | 55° C | 42° C | 57° C | 54° C | |Sensor 3 | 0° C | 0° C | 0° C | 0° C | |Core 0 | 2.54 V | 2.26 V | 2.54 V | 2.53 V | |Core 1 | 3.55 V | 3.50 V | 3.63 V | 3.56 V | |+3.3 | 3.22 V | 3.20 V | 3.23 V | 3.21 V | |+5.00 | 5.40 V | 5.38 V | 5.43 V | 5.39 V | |+12.00 | 0.85 V | 0.43 V | 15.50 V | 0.89 V | |-12.00 | -10.99 V | -10.99 V | -10.88 V | -10.98 V | |-5.00 | -0.46 V | -0.50 V | -0.26 V | -0.46 V | |Fan 1 | 0 RPM | 0 RPM | 0 RPM | 0 RPM | |Fan 2 | 14673 RPM| 6617 RPM | 14673 RPM| 14136 RPM| |Fan 3 | 0 RPM | 0 RPM | 0 RPM | 0 RPM | My system specs are: Asus P5B motherboard 8800 GTS 640 Intel core 2 duo E6600 2.13 GHZ 2 gigs ram I can't remember the power supply but something tells me 550W? does that sound right? Thanks guys |

Re: Random shut off during high graphic games
the 12v reading is obviously wrong.the computer would never function if the voltages were that far out of spec.those temp readings the cpu current was 55c.is that an idle temp?if so heat may be the issue.

Re: Random shut off during high graphic games
why dont you confirm those voltage readings by checking them in the bios.if you dont know how to get into the bios.on most computers you hit the delete key after hitting the power button.on some prebuilt computers like hp,dell, sony etc its one of the f keys.

Re: Random shut off during high graphic games
VCore 1.272V
3.3V 3.216V 5V 5.043V 12V 11.880V I have also tried taking the side of the case off and had my desk fan blowing cold air into the comp to try and cool it but I still had the same problem. I have also reseated the RAM and no fix. |

Re: Random shut off during high graphic games
I am using forceware drivers 163.44,
I believe they are the beta drivers used to optimize bioshock. I am downloading the new ones, 163.71 It says they have improved crysis compatibility. Hopefully this does the trick. I'll let you know. Last edited by x-baller; 10-18-2007 at 07:35 AM. |

Re: Random shut off during high graphic games
It didn't happen when I played Bioshock, but then again it didn't happen the first couple of times I played the crysis beta. Something new today though, I was watching a video in windows media player and it shut off the same way :(

Re: Random shut off during high graphic games
Its definitely the graphics card.
Do you have any older cards that may not be as advanced or power consuming? a pos gfx card, if you dont mind me saying. id try using it for atleast 2 days and if it dosent shut off then you know what the problem is. alot of the reasons why computers would just shut off in my opinion is that the graphics card needs more juice to run and its just sapping it right out the power supply and if you dont have a good power supply you're gonna get this problem. lol or go liquid cooled. |

Re: Random shut off during high graphic games
its also possibly the power supply like hawman said.the graphics card wont function properly if it is power starved.

Re: Random shut off during high graphic games
Hi i'm having sort of the same problem with UT:3 but it says "UT3.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." then it asks if I would like to send a report. I have a AMD Athlon 64 FX Dual Core, and NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT so I think I can handle Unreal fine but I still cant figure out the problem. Now I am not a very big computer guy I just can spend money so..go slower please.
