[SOLVED] Half life 2 errors

Ok I just got the valve complete pack and spent a good part of my day installing Half life 2. When it was done I started it and began to play it. After about 15 minutes or so the game froze and the sound began to loop so I rebooted the computer and reinstalled the sound drivers and video drivers. Then I tried playing it again this time it froze and crashed to the desktop with an error message. You know the "HL2.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. What driver from Nvidia is best for Half life 2. They recommend the 94.24 version . Any suggestions?

personally i would just try the newest whql certified drivers.

does anyone have any Ideas? Oh and does anyone know how to safely flash Bios. I know I haven't updated that in a long time.

Flashing the BIOS is always risky and can lead to a damaged motherboard if it goes wrong. If you don't specifically need any of the new features listed in the BIOS update, I wouldn't bother flashing it.

I had a similar error a while ago and fixed it by fully uninstalling and then reinstalling the game.

Is there anything else mentioned in the error message? Any codes or links?

Ok I installed the new driver, played for about 5 seconds, and a BSOD ocured, with the sound looping. The code I got at the bottom of the BSOD was " STOP: 0x0000008e (0xC0000005, 0x805BBA97, 0xB0688AD8, 0x00000000) what does all this gibberish mean?

you have xp i see is it totally up to date.was just reading some info on the microsoft website.it said the error could be stopped by updating to the newest service pack.

ok I think something may be wrong with My BIOS because whenver I try to use the ASUS update utility to update my bios, I get an error message that says "SETUP CANNOT DETECT AN ASUS MOBO. SETUP WILL NOW ABORT" so what should I do. I think my bios is screwed up ?

i would just clear the cmos with either the jumper,or by pulling out the little battery on the motherboard.be sure the computer is turned off,and unplug it for the cmos reset.

ok I really dont want to screw this up cuz I have in the past. I have an asus a8n 32 sli deluxe mobo. How do I clear the CMOS. just be more specific like where is the battery, what jumper do I switch and for how long, where are all these things located. Things like that. thanks

you cant mess it up turn off the computer.unplug it then pull the little battery.here is a pic of one.

edit: just to be clear leave it out for about a minute.then put it back in plug the machine in then boot.you will have to reset the time,and date no big deal.

ok I succesfully updated my BIOS. But now whenever I start playing the game, it will freeze after about 20 seconds and weird sounds will began to come out of the speakers. The sounds you get when you have dial up internet. So now what should I do. I have:
1. updated my video card drivers
2. updated sound card drivers
3. updated BIOS
4. installed Counter Strike source
5. Installed many different versions of my video card drivers
6. Done numerous restarts
7. cleared CMOS
What else can I do? I guess I could try uninstalling then reinstalling it. But if that dosen't work what else should I do?

i guess the next thing to try is reinstalling it.after the uninstall i would make very sure all files for it are deleted.you might should even run regedit to delete all registry entries for it as well.for the install of it kill off as many running processes as possible.especially things like an antivirus program they sometimes mess up installs.

ok I tried that too. But it still has an error. I guess Ill just format my hardrive and start over. Is there any other suggestions before I do this. ANd after I format my hardrive what do I do next? what order do I install things in?

i always install windows first (duh lol) then be sure all devices are installed.check the device manager before you go any farther.the next thing is an antivirus i use avast.to my knowledge it has never interfered with other things being installed.then go get all the windows updates,and yes i said all of them.this insures your os is up to date,and wont have problems installing other things.

Ok I completely formatted and reinstalled Windows. SO we know It has nothing to do with windows. I installed the 84.21 nvidia driver and now whenever I play the game it will either hard restart after 2 minutes or will crash to the desktop saying half life 2.exe has encountered an error. So what should I do?

ok I went to the event manager and this is what is says:
It says 2 things

1 "Faulting application hl2.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module datacache.dll, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00008a37."

2.Fault bucket 257576848.

what do these mean?
