Server set-up help please
Hi all,
I am very new to this issue so please bear with me... I am trying to set up a "server" in my home so a few freinds can connect directly and play Rogue Spear in mullti-player. I am trying to have it so it will be password protected but they can connect anytime - so it will pretty much be always available, if some guys want to play they can connect and see who else is on.... My question is basically how do I get started doing this, I do not know where to begin. Putting connection speed and firewall issues aside... do I need to partition a disk, install server software .... any recommendations? I think that basically I will need to give them a static IP toand allow access to an area of my drive where Rogue Spear is running...??? something like that??? I am looking for a bump in the right direction. Currently have a P4 running WinXP home Verizon DSL Thanks! Mike Last edited by Cumberland Mike; 08-25-2007 at 06:19 AM. Re: Server set-up help please
do you have a router?if so its most likely the router blocking them.with a router you will need to set the static ip like you said, but you will also need to setup port forwarding on the router.

Re: Server set-up help please
THanks for the reply, but maybe I was not clear enough. I am not even that far. TO answer your question though, yes I do have a router. So I will need to do what you suggest. Thank you
but I am asking for some info to start at the very begfinning .... step #1 - if I wamt to set up a computer so it can be acessed from the internet - so someone can play a game ont it ... do I need to reun some kind of server software?, does the "server" need to be a separate parition to protect the rest of the hard drive from access? - Once I get server softweare running --- whats next. Very basic questions. You are way ahead of me for right now. Thanks! Mike |

Re: Server set-up help please
this is for a game correct?if the game can be run that way the answer is no.i used to run a game server for freelancer.i had nothing special just windows xp.i assume that game has some kinda of settings to start the server for it.just start the hosting part of the game, and you will need to do the port forwarding for it to work.i will look into that specific game for a not so generic answer.

Re: Server set-up help please
Maybe that is the answer ... perhaps I was looking too far.
So if my game has its own built in hosting function ... start it and let it run... I think thats the answer.. Can't see the forest through the trees! Thanks |
