pc crashing during game play
ok i have a geforce 7600, core 2 duo and 2 gigs of ram in my pc so i know that my pc can take games that i put in it but my problem is that it will run games that r on cd. i play supreme commander for hours then i play a game i got off the web like war rock and knight online and my pc will crash after 5 min of the game being on u dont even have to play it will just turn my pc off just haven the game on. i have tried redownloading all the games from the web and keep getting the same results. i dont know what the problem is. i know my pc is not over heating. but it shuts down in a way that the only way i can get it back on is if i flip the power switch in the back to off then push the power butten on to get the remaing power out of the psu and flip the switch back to on and turn on the pc.
please help! thanks |

Re: pc crashing during game play
Welcome to TSF.
Before we get into the details of solving this, could you clarify some things for me please? Firstly, you say you've tried "redownloading" these games - are they legit copies, or are you downloading them through a P2P program or something? Secondly, could you clarify this sentence please "but my problem is that it will run games that r on cd"? Do you mean the system will run games which are on CD, but won't run games you've downloaded?

Re: pc crashing during game play
when i say it will run games on a cd is that it will run any game that i buy at a store that comes on a cd. the problem with my pc is that it will shut off with games that come off the web. i have not tried other little games, i am talking about pretty big files. the games that i download are all legit and free to use. i got them from the games website. that is where i downloaded them again. but its not just for 1 game i have downloaded a few other games from other makers and they all do the same thing. they crash my pc.

Re: pc crashing during game play
Hi sappy324,
Sorry to take so long to get back to you. How many CD-based games have you tried, and found to not crash your system? Could you list a few for us please? The games you download from the net, are they online games only, or are some of them offline games? (That is, do you have to connect to the net to play them?) Could you please provide a link to the site you download them from, so I can check it out?

Re: pc crashing during game play
games that crash my rig are.... WAR ROCK, KNIGHTS ONLINE, total war 2 witch i had on demo a long time ago and worked fine. all of these u can get from the site. the only one thats not online played is total war 2. i cant find out what would just shut off my pc like that. so i put in supreme commander and let it sit running on my pc for and hour and a half and no problems. it it was going to crash it would do it in the first five mins.
thanks |

Re: pc crashing during game play
flipping the switch off and on to get it to restart resets the power supply and is the first indication of a failing power supply

Re: pc crashing during game play
What brand/model is your PSU, and how old is it? Just because it says "550 Watts" does not mean it's putting out that much juice. Off-brand PSU's often tend to overstate their actual production, and older ones suffer from degraded performance over time.
Do you have a multimeter or PSU tester? Or another PSU to swap out with?

Re: pc crashing during game play
i know its not the psu because i already said my pc takes on pretty new games for hours on end. its the ones off the web that arent as graphics intense, it the ones off the web that r pretty weak on everything so there is no way i psu can tell when i am playing a crap game ( OFF THE WEB) or when i play my store bought game.
