PC shutdown during 1st few min of game play

hello all,

I have a problem with my rig, currently I put in some new parts to resolve some heat issues with my setup, the computer ran fine with the exception of a few rendering issues in custom maps but never completely shut off.

I will start by describing my set up

Intel core 2 duo 6600 1.86 GHZ OC'd 2.2 (the builder told me it only oc's during gameplay tasks, is it possibly to do this? i've never heard of such things.)

ASUS PN5ESLI mobo
2GB ram
650w cooler master PSU (sli certified)
2 GeForce 7600GT 256mb in SLI
cooler master dual VGA water cooling unit
Zalman 120mm 2 ball bearing cpu fan

there are plenty of fans throught the case.

the CPU at 100% is 47c
the mobo at 100% is around 40

Recently the PSU was replaced from 480w to a 650w coolmaster unit that is approved for SLI, the unit before worked and powered the system, it was warm due to the 2 video cards so i decided that the cooling system would solve this, it was recommended that i upgrade my psu along with this so i did.

But when trying to play CoD2 withing the first few minutes the entire system shuts off, almost as if the power is pulled from the wall. The resolution is 1600x900, directx 9, optimizing for SLI is enabled. I think a setup like this should have no problem what so ever.

I was thinking a bad PSU was sold to me, but i wanted to see some other opinions.

thanks for the help!

Re: PC shutdown during 1st few min of game play

i had a simular prob with a oc grafix card at the end it came down to not enough power getting to the systerm.it sounds like a bad psu personally i use a 700w supply just to be safe. it might be worth checking the 4 pin slot on the mother board see if there is any sigh of burning or damage it could be not enough power is getting to the mother board due to damage hope this helps.

if the power supply is the only thing you changed, and are suddenly having a problem.it seems most likely that unit is defective.

Definitely sounds like a PSU problem. Download Everest (in my signature), and record the idle and load (if you can) voltages. Post them here.

I don't recommend getting Cooler Master PSU's - you're much better off with a brand like OCZ, Silverstone, or FSP, as they're higher quality, and much more stable.

Re: PC shutdown during 1st few min of game play

The voltage readings you have give indicate your PSU is no match for your system. The 12v rail under voltage (11.78v) on full load you should only see a .05v drop. And your 2.5v which should actually be 3.5v is under voltage aswell. Your system is drawing to much for the PSU to handle.
Follow Indoril Nerevar advise and get your self a better PSU.. If you want a balance between quality and price Thermaltake is the better brand. But if you have money the splurge then go for a Sliverstone.

Re: PC shutdown during 1st few min of game play

Hi,

Regarding your voltages, they're actually in the okay range. However, that doesn't mean that your PSU is okay, and I still think you should either get it replaced, or go for a new one. Your voltages should be in the following ranges:

+12V: 11.4V - 12.6V
+5V: 4.75V - 5.25V
+3.3V: 3.135V - 3.465V
(Basically +/- 5%)

If you overload the unit too far, though, it won't matter what your voltages are, because the unit will simply drop out. The better choice of the two PSU's you listed is the 700W. OCZ make good units - definitely worth the money.

Re: PC shutdown during 1st few min of game play

heres another bit of information,

if i take the graphics settings up very high, the systems shuts off within a few minutes.
if i take the side panel off while at these settings, its lasts about 8 minutes.
if i put the settings at optimal settings, set by the program, its lasts about 15 minutes.

the end result is the PC shuts off.

like i said before the previous PSU did the job with 480w. so my only conclusion is either the PSU is faulting at high draw. or with the new power something on the board is heating up and shutting the machine down.

any other ideas?

i am trying a new PSU tomorrow btw...

Let us know how the new PSU goes. Which one did you get?

im looking to get the OCZ extreme 700w. but im also looking at the antec neo modular supply, leaning more to the OCZ because of reviews and its on sale at 109.

Both Antec and OCZ make good units, so go with whichever one you prefer. Either way, you'll get a good deal.
