zooming noise

pc: winxp, amd athlon 64 3500+, 1 gb ram, geforce 7900gt, pc-case: antec sonata II 450V.

Whenever playing a bit heavier game, there is a "zoom" sound, louder than usual. It seems like it's from the fan-area at the back-side of the case, from a fan spinning really fast or anything to make the loud zoom "noise". I'm not really sure where the sound is exactly from and what part causes it.

Re: zooming noise

Hi,

Sounds like it's just one of your fans (likely the power supply fan) speeding up to combat the higher temps reached when under load. Does it annoy you? If so, you'll need to identify exactly where the noise is coming from (take the side off the case to listen better, if you can), and look into replacing that part.

If it's just a case fan, it'll be easy enough, and fairly cheap. However, if it's the power supply, that's a little more complicated. You can find PSU's with "silent" fans, but you need to make sure the PSU is high quality and can support your system.

Re: zooming noise

well the pc-case already had a power supply in it (antec sonata II 450V), but I'm not sure how it's been set up.

Yes, that's what I mean - the noise is likely coming from the fan in the current power supply.

450W is actually too low for the system you're running, so I'd upgrade the power supply anyway. You really should be running your system on a 550W or higher. You've got a good brand, but the unit isn't big enough.

Re: zooming noise

The sound is probably from the big fan, I'm not really sure what part it is. But I also hear the sound when no game or any program is running at all, except a few light prog. The spinning sound has a few high tones, which makes it annoying.

Re: zooming noise

Well, there's not much more we can do from here. It's up to you to find out which component is making the noise, and do what you will with it. You can try unplugging case fans, to eliminate or identify them. Once you've found out which component it is, your only real option is to replace it.

Good luck.
