BF2 Problems

When I run bf2 on my computer it has an average fps of 63 but whenever i start a new map or enter a new area my HDD goes crazy and makes a lot of noise and my FPS goes from 67 to 2 for about 15 sec and then recovers. What is happening and how do i stop it. I have a 7900gt 256mb, 3500+ and a gig-o-ram so whats up?

Hi, welcome to TSF

How much free hard drive space do you have left? Have you defragged lately? What are your swap file settings (virtual memory)?

Re: BF2 Problems

Hey BF2 runs best with two gigs of ram, double what you have. You will enjoy your game experience much more!

Re: BF2 Problems

When your HDD goes crazy on BF2 theres nothing really you can do about that. What is happening is simple... When you change map it tries to load the new map with the existing textures in the RAM. When i finds it carnt use all the textures it starts to empty them onto the HDD at the same time it loads the new ones on the RAM (The slowdown on the map for the first few seconds is your pc still unloading unwanted textures).. This can help by having lots of RAM (you have enough) or by having a large HDD buffer (8-16<mb). Another factor is you swap file (virtual RAM). Having too much or too little can have a performance impact on your PC. With 3.5bg of RAM set the pagefile to about 2-4gb.
This should smooth out performance. Also go to www.tweakguides.com and look up BF2 for some tweaking

Re: BF2 Problems

Hello Canus and Welcome to TSF.

Just to echo Koala, Pharoah, et. al., you'll notice a dramatic difference in BF2 experience by adding another gig of ram. Even another 512mb for a total of 1.5gb will help, but a full 2gb of system ram is the sweet spot for BF2 and BF2142.

Happy gaming,
Matt
