Problems loading XP compatible games

Hi. Ever since we've had our Dell Dimension 4700 desktop with windows XP we have had problems loading about 50% of new games, all of which claim to be XP compatible. Dell recently suggested i reloaded the OS, but that has made no difference. One of the game manufacturers, Vivendi, suggested disabling all startup applications, then deleting all temporary files & folders. This has not helped and in fact has made things worse! Now I get a MOM.exe application error message every time I boot up. And since that has happened we can no longer download from i-tunes. Help! Does anyone have any suggestions? Than ks!

Please dont double post on the same subject!

Alright, when the games are installing do or did you get any "mysterious" error or somthing? If you did, please state what it said, or an error code if displayed.

Also, since you now have these problems with pop ups and Itunes malfunctioning, i would recomend either re-installing Itunes. MOM.exe is a program added by ATI's video card drivers, re-install the driver which applies to you and see if you the error. * http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html *

Which Vivendi game was it? Also, if you dont mind, can you list the hardware that is on your computer so i can figure out if it has something to do with that.

Do this by:

1. Control panel
2. System
3. Device manager
4. Please list the: Video card, CPU, Sound Card, Hard Disk, and the Optic drive
5. Also, please list how much memory (RAM) your computer has.

Re: Problems with XP compatible games

Hi Facade. Thanks for the advice and help. There are no mysterious errors or messages when installing. In fact it looks like everything's okay. Then it just won't play. We have actually had trouble with at least 2 games: (1) Battle Castle / Pirate Raider by Vivendi for Fisher Price and (2) Jurassic Park Operation Genesis from GSP. There have been others, but I can't remember them now!

In answer to the hardware info:
Video card: Radeon X300 from ATI (128 MB). Driver version 8.351.0.0
Sound Card: SoundMAX Digital Audio
CPU: Pentium(R)4 3GHz
Not sure about the optic drive - couldn't identify anything through the device manager
Hard disk: 160GB SATA (7200rpm)
RAM: 512MB

Thanks again,
V

Re: Problems loading XP compatible games

The weakest link in there is the X1300 video card. If you're not looking to run very intense 3D games then you should be just fine. The 512MB of RAM will also cripple the system enough, but it should at least be trying a bit harder. -.-

I suggest you begin by visiting http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and getting any updates that are available for your OS, then we'll tackle the game software.

Re: Problems loading XP compatible games

Thanks to everyone for the advice and help.

I've done all the updates I can to the OS.

In answer to Facades questions on the hardware:
Video card: Radeon X300 from ATI (128 MB). Driver version 8.351.0.0
Sound Card: SoundMAX Digital Audio
CPU: Pentium(R)4 3GHz
Not sure about the optic drive - couldn't identify anything through the device manager
Hard disk: 160GB SATA (7200rpm)
RAM: 512MB

I think it's looking like we don't have a powerful enough video card. Any recommendations?

Thanks again,
V

Re: Problems loading XP compatible games

to know what to recommend, we need to know the type of video card slot (agp, pci-e) that you have in your comp (agp im guessing since its a x300). also, a price range. and as 1 got own3d said, you will probably have to upgrade the power supply. however, i checked the system req's for the games, and they definitely arent top of the line.
battle castle:
# Windows:
# Windows 98/ME/2000/XP
# Pentium II 266 MHz or faster (Pentium II 300 MHz or faster for XP)
# 64 MB RAM (128 MB RAM for XP)
# 24x CD-ROM drive
# 16-bit color 800X600 screen resolution
# Windows-compatible sound card QuickTime 5.0.2

jurassic park:
* Windows 98/Me/2000/XP
* 400 MHz Pentium III, Celeron, or AMD Athlon processor
* 128 MB RAM
* 16 MB 3D accelerator (TNT2 or better) and DirectX 8.1-compatible driver
* 700 MB hard disk space plus 300 MB for Windows swapfile
* DirectX 8.1b
* 640 x 480, 16-bit color
* Mouse and keyboard
