High end games (such as doom 3, Stalker shadow of chernobyl) run very slow

Specs:
MSI P6N SLI Mobo
512MB Radeon x1650 PCI EXpress
Core 2 Duo 2.4 Processor
2 gb of Kingston ram
WD 250 GB hdd

I just put 1000 dollars into building my new pc. I'm angry because I try to run high end games and they run very sluggish. The lag is unbearable. My chipset/drivers are all updated and games are all patch without any luck. Can anybody help??

Re: High end games (such as doom 3, Stalker shadow of chernobyl) run very slow

first thoughts id say it one of two things.its either power supply list it brand and specs,or its the video card its a midrange video card.the rest of your system looks good the video card is most likely the bottleneck.

Re: High end games (such as doom 3, Stalker shadow of chernobyl) run very slow

It def cannot be the PSU. I have a 650 w Antec i just bought a few months ago w/ a 80% (or 90, i cant remember) efficiency. And i really wouldn't consider the 1650 series "mid range". I just had a custom p4 3.0 ghz w/ a ATI 512 mb x1600 agp and it ran Doom 3 perfectly. I just got rid of that pc because i was sick of the heating issues w/ the Prescott. If this helps, and i hope this isn't the case, someone told me it could possibly be that its incompatible w/ my MSI mobo. Any other suggestions?

not at all because a midrange card such as a 1650.definetly isnt going to run stalker on full settings.

well i turn on temporal anti-aliasing in CCC and doom 3 runs smoothly. I did hear that stalker is demanding of video cards. I've turned the detail down up and all around with no luck w/stalker. You think if i turn down the res that might help a bit?

Re: High end games (such as doom 3, Stalker shadow of chernobyl) run very slow

Hi ,

Are you running window Vista - I've heard a lot of people complaining that games run slow with it...

One constructive comment though is that the pedigree of system you've built really cries out for a more superior gfx card than an x1650 which is very mid range - min i'd put in your system would be a 7900gs or x1900 series card - personally I'd have gone for an 8800 series card which would support dx10 in the future..

Phil.

well here are some links, however in another week or so.there are some cheaper dx10 cards coming out.namely the 8600gts/gt.from the specs, and some benchmarks around the gts looks like a beast.

7900gs cards

1950xt cards

8600gts < not out yet

Re: High end games (such as doom 3, Stalker shadow of chernobyl) run very slow

Thanx guys for all your help. I'm kinda on a tight budget so i might just go for one of 7900gs cards. Even thought its a 256 mb, that wont change much from a 512mb will it?

only change you will see is faster games.that 7900gs will blow the doors off a 1650.actually a 1650 isnt even strong enough to utilize 512mb.

your welcome also do keep in mind about the new dx10 cards coming out soon.newer games not yet released most everything will be going dx10.that 8600gts i mentioned benchmarks as good,or better than the 7900gs,and the 8600 also has dx10 support.

Re: High end games (such as doom 3, Stalker shadow of chernobyl) run very slow

Does this mean that newer games will be completely incompatible w/7900gs? or they wont look as good

it will be a good while before games totally drop dx9 support, but still the new 8600 series would probably be worth the wait.thats what i am waiting for myself.

Re: High end games (such as doom 3, Stalker shadow of chernobyl) run very slow

Put it this way - how many people play games made before 2002, on dx9 cards?

It's my understanding that if we can play dx8 (or even 7 or 6) games on dx9 supporting cards; why not dx9 games on dx10 cards?
