Hello everyone I am having a little trouble with a newly installed raptor x drive. I am using a seagate drive for all of my os and everyday software but I installed a raptor x for gaming. Everyone raves on the speed and reliabilty so being a diehard gamer I opted for the best. The seagate drive is C: and the raptor is drive G:. I can install games fine to drive G and they work great by just clicking on the window icon for the game but the problem comes in when I try to patch a game. I saved the patch to drive G and then ran it but it will not install to the game. After changing the destination it installs fine but then it keeps asking me for disk one of the game to play it, even though disk one is already in the dvd drive. So I guess what I need to know is how to patch games that are on my second drive? When they were on the primary drive it was just a simple click but now it's a pain. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My setup if needed is as follows: AMD64fx 60, seagate barracuda 320, raptor x 150, BFG 7800gt cards in SLI, Asus A8n-32, x-fi sound blaster, 2GB OCZ ram.

Welcome to TSF.
We need to know a few more details to be able to help you with your problem. 1. Are you using original discs, or do you have copies? 2. Which games do you have this problem with? 3. Where exactly is the problem, and what happens? (eg: if when you run the patch from drive G it gives a specific error, we need to know that error message.)

I have an fx60, seagate 320GB (c:), raptor x (G:), asus A8n-32sli, 2GB ocz, 2x 7800gt in SLI. My problem is with the new raptor x listed above as drive G:
I use the seagate drive to run the OS and the other non game related software. The raptor I purchased just for gaming but every time I install a game on it everything goes ok but the game will not run when the icon is clicked. I have never used two drives so I am unsure if I am screwing something up. I tried going into the folder in the G drive but it would not start from there either. I am wasting a lot of time and the frustration is rising. Also both drives are running with sata 2 cables connected to the sata 1 and sata 2 ports on the motherboard. When I install the games i run the setup as usual but when it asks for a location (which always comes up with a C: drive destination) I change it from C: to G:. Everything installs but nothing runs!!!!!! I need help stat!!! Thanks. If needed I am running windows xp home edition sp2. Never have problems running games from C: drive either. |

I merged your two threads, as they are on the same topic. Please answer the questions in my previous post, so we have a bit more info.
Also, when you change the install location to drive G, are you putting each game in its own folder? If not, you need to do so. Otherwise you may get conflicts with one game trying to use another game's file.

I am using all original game discs. It happens with all games. Sacred, Fear, are the two I have just tried. When sacred is installed it will run from drive G but when the patch is used it installs but then it constantly asks me to insert disc 1 into the drive to play even though disc 1 is already in it. With Fear it installs on drive G but when the icon is clicked the hourglass show for a couple of seconds and nothing happens. When I open up the my computer section and access it right from the disc the opening screen loads (section where you select play, options, etc,)I click on play and you can hear the drive spool up for a few seconds but nothing happens on the screen. I have played these games many times before from the C: drive so I know they work fine. It must be something I am doing wrong in the install process or something I am missing when trying to get them to run. I have never used two drives so there is a high possibility I am missing something. When the games enter the setup screen when first installing them the only thing I change is the destination. ie. C:sacred/programfiles to G:sacred/programfiles. It installs to drive G and places a game icon on the desktop screen. When the cursor is placed over the icon it shows that it is in fact in drive G, but clicking on it has the earlier mentioned results. Thanks for any help.

Okay, follow these steps for me, and post back with results (may not necessarily fix the problem, but will help us narrow it down):
- Uninstall both games completely. - Go into G drive and delete any leftover files or folders from those games. - Create a new folder in G drive, called "FEAR". (The path would then be G:\FEAR.) - Run the install for FEAR again, and instead of changing the drive letter, click the Browse button and navigate to the folder you just created. Select it as the install destination. - Check that the path is correct, and then continue with the install as per usual. - Run the game from the shortcut on the desktop. There is no problem with running games on a second drive - I do exactly the same thing. All my games (including FEAR) are run from my G drive, while Windows is on a completely separate drive. If you follow the steps laid out above, you should have no problems. Let us know how you go, and if you do encounter problems, tell us exactly what happened and where, so we can work out what's going wrong.

I followed all the steps and it is installed G:/FEAR. It does exactly the same thing. I can click on the desktop icon but nothing happens. The folder is exactly where it should be on drive G. I can go into the folder and it still does not work. I don't get it!!! It's all there but it just won't work. Is there a problem with the drive maybe? It has been formatted and shows as active in the desktop manager. Thanks for any further help.

What happens if you start it from the game exe file in the game folder?
When you formatted the drive, did you make sure the file system was NTFS? Also, how long are you giving FEAR to start? When you first start any game, it will take a while to start up, and FEAR does take a very long time - during which it will appear to be doing nothing.

I just checked and it was formatted in NTFS. I also noticed something new when I tried to install a game to the C drive it now does the same thing as the G drive. Everything installs properly with desktop icons and everything but when you click on it the hourglass shows for 1-2 seconds and then nothing. Before the G drive was installed on friday the 26th I did not have this problem. In the disk manager the C drive shows as healthy system and the G drive shows as healthy active. What the heck could have happened by simply installing a hard drive? Sata 2 drives do not require jumpers do they? I have tried to run the games from the .exe file but with the same results. The raptor spins up for a second and then nothing. I get no error messages or anything. Only the games that were installed on the C drive before the G drive install still run. (Oblivion, Battlefield 2142). Could there be an OS problem? Also I am new to the whole sata setup, do they have to be in any particular sata port? I believe I already told you they were C in sata1 and G in sata2. Thanks again for any help.

I have some other weird info that may identify the problem. I noticed that when I tried to install Heroes of might and magic 5 and sacred the games do not ask for the pass codes. I know that's definately not right. Sacred gold is the only game so far that actually works but it runs slow on the C drive. I have read an article recently from a gamer that said he needed to configure his pc to utilize the dual core proc. It was not letting software work properly. I cannot find the article but does it sound like anything you have ever encountered? Thanks again

I haven't heard of dual-cores interefering in this way, but download and install this AMD driver, and see if anything changes.
Is C drive formatted in NTFS as well? You can put the drives on whatever port you like, so long as you set it up right in the BIOS. If you don't set it up right, it won't boot, so the fact that you can get into Windows means there's no problem there. Did you give FEAR a while like I suggested? It may take a few minutes, so don't give up on it after 30 seconds. If it hasn't done anything in 5 minutes, then you can say it's not doing anything.

Here's another thing you can try:
Go Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs, and click "Show Updates" at the top. Scroll down, and see if you have Windows security update number 917422. If you do, go to the link below and follow the instructions there. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924867

Yes the C drive is formatted in NTFS and yes I have waited awhile for fear to load and nothing. I did have the update number of 917422 and I followed the website and downloaded the hotfix for the problem. Unfortunately there is no change. Do you think the bios could be an issue seeing as the raptor x is a pretty new drive on the market? I tried to update it and it will not work so I will be contacting ASUS to try and help me with the issue. Also do you know if the drive G should be shown as active? I told you it was listed as healthy but in the right click window it asks if you would like the drive listed as active. I tried it as active but did not see any difference. Thanks again.

"Active" just means it can have an OS on it - it indicates to the system that it can be booted from (which will only work if you have an OS on there, of course).
I'm running out of ideas on this, so I will get some other people to jump in and help.

I am using an antec truepower 550w 2.0 psu and the only antivirus programs running are the aol security center which I think is Mcafee. I have never had a problem with these in the past. As a note I got fed up last night and completely wiped out both the C and G drives, reformatted them and reinstalled EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!! All devices have the latest drivers except the bios. I contacted Asus and they are sending me out a new chip because the bios will not let me flash it. I still had no problems playing games before so I doubt the bios is an issue. I have contacted the manufacturers of fear and might and magic five and they seem to think the latest patches will fix the problems. I am now in the process of downloading those so we shall see in a couple of hours. I will post back with the results later. Thanks again for all the help.

Ok I have solved all of the issues and would like to thank all the kind folks that have helped. Heroes of Might and Magic 5 just required a patch, fear required me to go into the game properties and check the box for run this program in compatability mode for windows 2000, (even though I am running XP) doing the same thing was required for the extraction point add on, and sacred gold required patching. It's pretty lame that some new games won't even run out of the box without a patch!!! Hope this will help anyone else with the same issues. Thanks again.
