XP won't let me install FSX

Dell, Pentium 4 (3gig), 1 gig RAM. As soon as the DVD door closes, the system hangs. I get no messages, no error messages, no nothing. Have to reboot manually at the CPU. I don't have this problem with anything else I attempt to install. I tried "Safe Mode" and at least I got a message: "1607:Unable To Install Installshield Scripting Runtime". I had FS2000 installed and when I got FSX for Christmas I uninstalled 2000. When I couldn't get FSX installed I reinstalled FS2000 with no problems. I tried my son's copy of FSX and had the same exact problem, so it's not the disc. BTW, I know enough about computers to get myself in serious trouble messing around, and although I will appreciate any and all help, please don't get too technical.

Problem solved. The DVD drivers were not working correctly. I thought I had run a DVD in it, but apparently I had only run CDs. Everything is fine now. Thanks for your help.
