New computer, CS just exits to desktop

So I just got my new computer, (core 2 duo 6600, 2 gigs ram, geforce 7900) and whenever i join a CS server, I see one frame of the game and then it exits to the desktop with no error messages or anything.

also, i tried just regular Halfe-Life deathmatch, and the game stayed open, but unless i was looking at the menu (by either hitting esc, or the tilde key) i couldn't see anything. as in, the game looked perfectly normal if i was looking at the console, but as soon as i went back to just the game it froze up until i went back to the console.

any ideas?

I moved you to the support section to better expedite your issue.

Run through the first steps here and report back.

I'm think it is a driver issue with Sound or Video.

When the game crashes to desktop, does it crash when its loading? Or after you've been playing it?

to update

I can play Prey, Quake 4, Halfe Life 1 (both online and offline), Halfe Life 2 (offline only, deathmatch and CS:S both crash as soon as soon as I get connected to a server).

Half life 1 messed up the first time i tried to play online, but it's worked the last couple times.

CS crashes right after the server loads (i see one frame of gameplay and then it exits to the desktop)

update your sound and video drivers and DirectX. You probably already have 9.0c, but it may not be the latest.

it is the latest, it's a new computer and i just installed all the newest drivers yesterday.

When my BF2 crashed to the desktop when it loaded, it was because I didnt have the latest monitor drivers, and it wasnt at 800x600 @ 60hz refresh rate.

i'm really confused...it seems to be just games on steam, cause i can play bf2 online no problem, but i don't understand why i would be able to play half life, hldm, and half life 2 single player but not be able to play cs, cs:s, or hl2dm

You may need to contact Valve then since it seems to be an error with Steam. Steam can be buggy sometimes.

I'm 90% sure you just screwed up your settings or put in the wrong file.

I had the exact same problem when I used to play CS. Always happens when I download some unrecognized skins or some hacks that are corrupted.

Did you modify anything at all? Like the spray logo to a custom image..etc.
