Error when trying to open games

Hey fellas, first post here for me. I've been having this problem for awhile with games not wanting to load by giving me an error saying:

Earth2160.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the program.

I just bought this game off of steam. I haven't played any real games on this computer in a long while, due to my addiction to my car lol. But the last games to work if I remember correctly were Freedom Fighters and Battlefield 1942. This has happened for other games, most a little older though, like 2000+ still.

So what could be causing this?

The computer has:
1.8ghz p4
1024mb ram
fx5200 w/ 256mb ram

awesome. I updated the directx files and that allowed me to open the game. However, for the few seconds I had it opened for, since I'm short on time, it was laggy. I meet over the system specs so I don't know what would cause this.

Your CPU and RAM should be fine but your graphics card might not have the power needed, try turning some of the graphical settings down to low or medium in the game and see if that improves performance at all.

In most cases the minimum specs refer to what you need to just run the game, you usually need double what is stated to be able to fully enjoy the game as it is meant to be.

I'm looking at the recommended specs, on steampowered.com and it shows a 256mb graphics card to be fine. I will do the rest later tonight when I get home from school.

edit:sorry i posted the wrong graphics card...its a geforce fx5600xt 256mb

I've just looked up a review i had in a magazine and your right, your GPU should be fine, however it has a recommended 2.0Ghz CPU so that might be where you are losing a bit in performance.
As i said though, it should be fine, you might just have to adjust the settings a little to suit your machine.

install the Nvidia 84.21 (or .12 not sure) Drivers. That will usually fix the problem.

click the Nvidia drivers link in Tibers Signature in the thread thers a link to those drivers.

I downloaded the nvidia drivers and it still running sluggish on the low to medium settings.

So I got it to run fairly smooth, on pretty low graphical settings. I don't think with this computer it should have to be set so low though.

Well guys, thanks for all your help. I figured out why it was running so choppy. I did a look around and found the games website and it says that those running FX series graphics card have to use a previous shader version.

Did this and ran smooth with all settings on high :D
