Please Help Me

Hi im new to the tech support. I have a Dell Dimension 3100 with integrated graphics card and sound(Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900). Im not a geek i only know the very basics of computers. As you already know my computer is not meant for gaming looking at my DXDIAG specs below. It is fairly new with only 2 slots for RAM and im not sure if its PCI capatible or AGP . I am not even sure if i can even change the graphics card or not because its inbuilt or something.

I am really into PC gaming and i am interested in buying whatever computer parts to make my PC able to run games such as BF2 and CoD2. I dont want the top end graphics cards or whatnot. I just want to meet the mininum specifications if not higher for these games. If you dont already know Bf2 is an excellent game with really good graphics. NVIDIA is my first preference over ATI graphikz cards.

im mainly interested in the expansion slot information.

also, the 230w powersupply that dell has supplied you with is not sufficient at all if you plan on upgrading so a psu of atleast 500 watts is necessary.

for a PCI only card if this is the case you should get a ati x1300 PCI
for a PCI express card i would recommend an ati x1650pro PCIE

but please post your system specs and more detailed information about the mobo via everest home edition

EDIT: looking at the dell spec page you have one PCIe slot at x1 and two PCI slots. in this situation i would recommend getting a better PSU and an ati x1300 PCI. you could try to run the ati card without a more powerful PSU but i believe the system will be underpowered by about 50 watts

a PSU is a power supply unit. where you plug ur power cable in usually a small little grey box with a fan. when you open up the computer u see all the power cables coming from it.

the everest report if you want you can post the whole thing but i googled enough to get the most important info and that is that you can only use a x1300pci really. I just looked up some other video cards and the x1300 exists also in pciexpress x1. here are the links

pcie x1 version will work in your computer as it states that it has such an expansion slot

this is the pci version of the same card aboe (id get the pcie version just because)

the x1300pci will be enough to run bf2 but i dont think it will run bf2 on the best settings.

for a power supply u can get those usually in any store id say a minimum for the system as i think i mentioned before is something around 400 to 500 watts

Also, just keep in mind that as your PC is a pre-built system that opening it up and tinkering will very likely void any warranties you may have on it and if you are looking at upgrading your power supply or any other component i would recommend asking the technicians at the store you buy it from to install it for you (most will charge a bit extra, but it is worth it), or take it into the dealer you purchased your PC from and see if they will do it for you.

This way there is no way you can be blamed for any damages caused to the PC from upgrading and your warranties will still be intact.

one more thing to consider.

When buying a new video card, you'll need a new power supply (as mentioned above). You will have to do a little research or ask (as Tiber said) about it. My thought is that it might be a microATX form power supply so Dell could save room inside the case. If that is the case, then you'll have to look for one of those with enough power and it's hard to find them that are decent. Newegg.com has a good selection.

The next concern is the motherboard power connector. I'm not sure if Dell uses proprietary connectors anymore, but they used to. The industry standard connector is 24-pin (2 rows of 12). Or even a 20-pin (2 rows of 10). You will want to look to make sure that the power connector to the motherboard is one of these before buying a new power supply or else it won't work.

click here for a good informative article on power supply (with pictures so you know what you're looking for.) The first picture in the article is of an AT form connector...disregard that! Those are outdated. The form that you are interested in is ATX or MicroATX
