Lowering ping?

Are there any ways to lower your ping through tools, or altering settings?

Currently I'm running a cable connection and I seem to always ping around 150 to gaming servers. Can distance be the sole cause of high ping because I live in Hawaii, and I'm just wondering if there would ever be a way to get below 100.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Latency is affected by every connected device along the route. If your connection involves a satellite then you probably won't get anything lower than 100, but I may be wrong. Avoiding running multiple programs that use the line helps, as does powering down machines on a network that aren't in use.
