Question xbox360 hosting

Hi I have tried to solve this problem searching the internet, but get so confused with the process.
My problem is I have a xbox360, upgraded my connection through virgin to 20mg, I just cant host a game, it starts then lags out back to lobby, which does bring the other players moaning, the problem is it picks me as host more often than not, I have tried phoning xbox microsoft, but they only said that I have to make sure certain ports are open,(udp88 udp 3074 tcp 3074) so phoned virgin they assured me that all ports were open ? I tried to assign these ports via my pc which not sure if this worked, I have a netgear router wnr 2000 supplied by virgin. I have read that you can forward ports manually, confused how though, or something about putting your ip address outside the nat setting, again got confused. any ideas how to cure this problem, step by step for the thickies,Thats me. Thanks
