New Build - BSoD when running games/video[moved from m/b]

Hi everyone-

I just completed my first build and everything seemed to go fine, until I tried to play a game or watch a youtube video..... then BSoD.

So, here's the roundup: I purchased all new parts EXCEPT OS and Hard Drive. I wanted to use the one from my Dell that had all my photos/games/etc.....

Anyway, the OS that's on that HDD was XP and I updated to SP3. I was having some driver issues (Unknown device in device manager, but I fixed that). The main problem that remains is: I load any game, it loads fine, and looks fine for anywhere from maybe 2-3 minutes, and then it goes haywire and the screen flashes and I get weird textures and then freezup or BSoD. Games are Oblivion and Anarchy Online (which is quite old and shouldn't be very demanding).

I'm wondering if its the Dell install of the OS or if there's some conflict of drivers of the video card? The old PC this HDD came out of was the Dell XPS Gen 3 and had ATI drivers/card, plus SoundBlaster Card. I removed (manually) the drivers for the ATI, but I think everything else is still on there.

I'm also wondering if something else is wrong. I only have the Dell issued version of XP to load and I don't wanna wipe the HDD if I'm going to repeat the problem. Any suggestions? I'd like to wait for Windows 7 to come out and get a new HDD at that time, but that's a while yet, plus I didn't want to spend the extra cash.

Any help would be appreciated. I really can't wait another month to get back into gaming!!!

Side note: I ran memtest86 and I don't know if I even ran it correctly. It came on screen (I used CD bootable using the image burn method) and it ran in like 2.3 seconds and then loaded XP. I didn't see a report or any notification that it was good/bad....???

re: New Build - BSoD when running games/video[moved from m/b]

Dai-

I'm re-running memtest 1 stick at a time now (I didn't do that before). Anyway, on first pass, it seems the RAM is fine. I'm wondering about settings here, because I'm not sure what everything means:

Memtest shows the following on the test screen:

Intel Core 2 3166 MHz
L1 Cache 32K
L2 Cache 6144K
L3 Cache None
Memory: 2047M
Chipset: Intel P45/G45 - FSV : 372 MHz - Type : DDR2
Settings: RAM : 595 MHz (DDR1191) / CAS: 5-5-5-15 / Single Channel

Now, what I'm wondering is.... could there be a timing issue? Why is the setting for 595 MHz? I'm confused as to what this means.... this is DDR2 1066 MHz memory...... maybe I have an issue in BIOS?

DDR2 is double pumped. 595MHZ X 2= 1190MHz

re: New Build - BSoD when running games/video[moved from m/b]

Ok, well I'm still trying to work the bugs out of things, but here's a minor update:

I ran Memtest on each stick, both passed, but I only ran 1 test on each. I'll test overnight perhaps tonight or tomorrow, but I doubt there's a problem there.

I went into nVidia control panel and disabled PhysX support, and I also changed my BIOS First Init Display from PCI to PEG. Now, I don't know if either is doing something, but I just managed to play Oblivion for a solid 30 minutes with no crash. There was a mild video glitch in the beginning, but then it ran smoothly.

One other thing I'm noticing.... when I put in the Disk that came with the MoBo (the Gigabyte Utility DVD), under the system tab it indicates 2 Gb ram, no matter if I have one or both sticks installed. However, in the OS System Information, It's seeing 3.25 GB of ram (Windows XP).

Any thoughts?

Run cpu-z, see what it says for ram speed on the memory tab. If it shows 595Mhz.,
then your ram it quite a bit overclocked and unstable.

re: New Build - BSoD when running games/video[moved from m/b]

So- It's been stable most of the day, until I run a game called Anarchy Online.... it's fine for a while, then the BSoD again. I think there's some incompatibility with the video selections in the game settings.

Just now, got another BSoD:
------
A problem has been detected and winders has been shut down to prevent damage.

If this is the first time you've seen this crappy *** crap, then just go buy a Mac already. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching on shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced startup options, and then select safe mode.

*** Win32k.sys - Address BF813391 base at BF800000, Datestamp 49e87572

Beginning dump of physical memory.
Physical Memory Dump Complete.

Any ideas? It only seems to be this one game.

Your ram is running at 1066Mhz. so that's good.

Here's a 0x8E kb article at microsoft, not sure if it'll be any help.
the specific issue that the kb refers to was supposed to be fixed
with SP2.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/834450

Another place to look.

re: New Build - BSoD when running games/video[moved from m/b]

So, here's even a little more clarification.....

I've been having no problems recently with the EXCEPTION of running this online game, Anarchy Online. It's an old game, from 2001. It has a client launcher where you log in and you can set the video settings from the login screen. It's supposed to recognize your card so you can select the optimal performance, but the card I have isn't showing up in the selections. So, I think I narrowed it down to that, I'm just not sure how to solve that issue.

Then it's a game issue. I play one from 2003 that won't work in windows 7, have to boot
into xp to play. You might ask in the games forum, since it isn't a hardware issue.
Have you checked the forum for that game?
