Ok, I am late in playing Counter Strike

Could someone please tell me how to play Counter Strike online? I have googled it to no avail.
I downloaded Counter Strike 1.6 (already have Half-Life), but when I try to join a server, nothing happens. It can't be that people have stopped playing Counter -Strike? Any help would be good.

What is the difference between steam and non-steam?

Check the server filter. There are thousands of people playing.

How do I check the server filter? I am using this program called HLSW.....everytime I connect to a game, it says that some sound file did not download........whats the issue? Could someone please direct me to some free game launchers and server lists?

What does HLSW stand for? Aren't you playing through Steam?

HLSW is a game launcher, its a program that lets you find game servers and join them. I downloaded Steam, but I don't know how to use it (Yes, I really don't know anything about computers). Is Steam free, or do I have to pay something? Please give me directions.

i don't understand. Isn't Counter Strike a mod for half-life that you can download? Does one have to buy it?

Yes you need to actually purchase the game. It is not simply a mod for half-life.

My bad, so I guess thats why it does not work lol. So I guess they just sell it at a gaming store? Which one should I get....Counter Strike Source?

Yes you should buy Counter Strike Source if that is the game you wish to play. You must activate it through Steam, which will install itself (if not already installed) before you install CSS. Please note that if you didn't pay for your current copy of CSS, then it is a stolen game, and we at TSF can't and won't help with illegal activities such as helping to get stolen games working.

Is Counter-Strike 1.6 a MOD? I originally though all the Counter Strike series and Team Fortress series are MODS for Half-Life. This is the first time I am playing games in 7 years.

They were originally mods for HL. They then became retail products. Even 1.6 costs money. CS:Source is the latest version you can purchase based of the source engine.
Both versions can be purchased through the Steam store or at a brick and mortar store.

Unfortunately since this appears to be a pirated version of the game we cannot help with this.
