Fluctuating lateny/ping on a shared connection
Hi, my problem is quite simple but I can't figure it out. I moved into a new flat the other week and I share a connection with 2 other couples who live in separate rooms. There is an internet router in one room which I am linked up with via ethernet adapter. What I don't understand is that at certain times throughout the day (This is a random pattern) I will be playing a game for example CS 1.6 and my latency will start spiking to 100>. I assume its because they are downloading/streaming but all of the other people in the flat are using WiFi. I don't understand how me being on ethernet and them being on WiFi can affect me so badly as to make my ping flux up and down like crazy. If I download on my computer while playing It's completely fine. I can download at 600kb/s and still play CS with TINY lag spikes from a standard ping of 50 to about 60-80. Any input will be of great help. I just wonder if theres a solution for this annoying problem. I do not have access to the router/modem. It's in somebody else's room.
Whenever my lag spikes in game I say, "Flat mates are downloading", and they always respond with ,"Stop leeching and get hooked up by ethernet". Imagine trying to explain? |

Re: Fluctuating lateny/ping on a shared connection
I would invest in a person ISP but I don't have to pay for the internet connection and to be frank I can't afford it. I doubt my landlord would be willing enough to let me have a technician come out to install a new line anyway. The connection I'm on now is my only way of using the internet. I know beggars can't be choosers but hey alls I want is to be able to play a game right?

Re: Fluctuating lateny/ping on a shared connection
Bump! I seriously need to get this sorted ASAP! Somebody be my savior!
Is it possible to get a decent internet connection which runs games stably without having a BT phone line? Can anyone suggest a good ISP which doesn't require a lot of technical work to get set up. i.e having a technician spend hours installing a new cable or something? Is there an ISP which does wireless connections good enough for gaming? Thanks in advance. |

Re: Fluctuating lateny/ping on a shared connection
I don't know about your exact situation (the 'hours installing a phone line') but when me and my partner moved into our flat, we contacted Virgin Media, 10mbps. They had the job finished in 45 minutes (including installing phone, tv and internet) I would give them a ring and just tell thgem your situation and ask them to give you a rough estimate of how long it would take for them to install it.
Virgin Media Contact: 0845 840 7777 ![]() And yes they offer wireless too. |
