Unknown Problem with Xbox 360
I just got Live a few months ago and since the hour that I got it I've played the **** out of it. But for some reason since Superbowl Sunday, I've had crazy problems. For some reason when I join a CoD4 game, my connection is always one bar, while everyone else has full connection. I wondered if it was just CoD4, so I tried playing GTAIV and had similar results (lag, can't join games, etc). So I got back on CoD4 and every time I got the issue with the connection (because the connection would fluctuate from good to bad) I'd try to watch a YouTube video, hoping that streaming a movie on my laptop would show whether it's the Xbox or the internet. Streaming worked perfectly. I had no problems with my wireless connection to my laptop, yet the ethernet connection to my Xbox is shitty. So some time passes and I get to today. I called Xbox support and the guy told me some stuff but nothing worked. I decided to hook my ethernet cable into my laptop and see how the connection goes. It seemed it was a little slower, but sometimes it was the same as my wireless.
Is it possible that the ethernet cable is having issues? As I said before, the problems only started happening during Superbowl Sunday. Before that I NEVER had lag on Live. I've reset the router we have, as well as the wireless antenna on the roof that receives the signal. Is there anything I can do that might pinpoint the problem? Thanks in advanced, ~Kroovy |

Re: Unknown Problem with Xbox 360
Did anything happen on Sunday? Did you have some friends over? Someone could have... I don't know, spilled something on your router lol
Is your wireless connection secure? An unauthorized user of your bandwidth can slow you down. Have you tried resetting your XBOX 360's network settings to factory defaults? What times do you try to play? Your internet connection can vary at peak times if you are using cable internet. Everyone in your neighborhood uses a shared branch of bandwidth and sometimes ISPs overbook. When you have this problem, do a http://speedtest.net test on your computer. You should also call your cable company to see if they are working on the problem. They can run some tests on their end. Also, be sure your cable modem is not overheating. Mine was overheating and performance went down the can. You know, a lot of people were watching TV and maybe even surfing the net or maybe even streaming the Superbowl... |

Re: Unknown Problem with Xbox 360
Nothing happened on Sunday because I was alone and the router is downstairs in my dad's locked room. So I can't access the router without the door being unlocked. My wireless connection isn't secure, however, I live in rural Michigan. I have... six people living on my two mile long road. Only one person near me, and they're across the street and back a little bit, so they wouldn't even be able to pick up the signal.
I haven't tried resetting the settings. I just have it to automatic and I let it do it's own thing. When I was having the problems, it was at all different times, which made me think that it wasn't my ISP and rather my Xbox or something else. I think I may have diagnosed the problem but I'm not sure. I read somewhere that Xbox Live runs mostly on your upload speed rather than download speed. When I was doing my "test" with my laptop, I was trying to stream videos, thus utilizing the downloading capabilities. My "theory" is that my bandwidth was affected and when bandwidth dropped, my upload speed was affected to the point of where it messed with my Live connection. The download speed was probably also affected, but maybe not to the point of where I'm unable to do stuff. For instance, stream movies, which is what I would do with my laptop when the problems happened. I dunno if that's the problem or even if that makes sense, but everything seems to be ok now. I called my ISP the other day and the message for the tech support said they were experiencing problems due to wind. Thanks for the help. |
