Lag Problems with Steam games

I've been playing counter strike 1.6 for a while now with no lag problems as bad as this. Yesterday while i was playing i started to get lag spikes while playing, they continued to get more frequent until i had a constant ping of 1500+ which made the game completely unplayable. I tried restarting steam/computer/modem but nothing fixed the problem. Now when i find servers, the first server that comes up will have a latency of 50, the next 60, the next 72 and so on till it finds the last server which has a latency of 2000. Any server that i enter i have so much lag/latency that i don't see myself spawn i just stay in the view that your in when you first join the server.

Note that nothing was changed to do with my connection or computer when this started happening. I also went onto counter strike source and it was doing the same thing.

I don't know whether this is just a steam thing or not as i dont have any other games installed atm.

Also, is there a way to determine whether there is a problem with the computer or the internet connection?

All your drivers up to date?

anything running in the background that might be a system hog?

When you get this Lag does anythink at the top right of your screen
say "Connection Problems" if its a connection problem, then that should
come up in red. Cant miss it.
