Wifi Max connection- help please!!

Alright, first of all, this could be the completely wrong forum. I don't know. If it is, I'm really sorry.

So, I bought the WifiMax DS dongle about 4 months ago. I worked on the settings for hours and finally got it to work. Long story short, I would lose my connection a lot. I finally got sick of it and gave up.
But today, I pulled it out wanting to play Animal Crossing on WiFi, so I plugged it in. Usually, you're supposed to see something that says 'LAN connection settings" or something in the task bar. That never appeared for me. I know that you need to change the settings and stuff, but I can't because I can't seem to find them. Maybe I'm just stupid, I don't know. Also, the software that came with it is still installed, though I lost the CD, so I can’t uninstall and reinstall it.
I know that the WiFiMax was a bad purchase, but right now its all I have. I can’t afford anything else. So, if anyone could help me with my problem (I can’t change the settings.)

you may need to go into the control panel.under network connections,and see if it shows up there.
