VMware SRCDS appliance - Is there a use for this?
Hey guys.
I am working on a virtual appliance for VMware that would allow someone to quickly fire up a linux based SRDCS server without needing to know how to build and configure the linux server behind it. With the new JeOS (just enough OS) distros out by Ubuntu I am able to configure a base OS that runs a game server quite well. I have tested that I can build and run a game server on VMware 4 ESXi with 32bit JeOS or a stripped out 64bit VMware install of Ubuntu. I would need to spend the time with the startup scripts for this that would allow users to fire up the appliance and be prompted for everything they need to get the server online. I am still deciding if written instructions are sufficient for the steam game installs or if another script that prompts them for the game they want is better. This would also need to address server config files and service files for each game type in /etc/init.d that could easily be edited and launched by an average user. Here are my questions: 1. How many of you run game servers for SRCDS? 2. Is your game server virtual? 3. Would you consider making your SRCDS server virtual if it's not? 3. Would you use a virtual appliance for your virtual SRCDS server?
